Hindu woman forced to eat beef, raped and pushed into prostitution by Muslim man posing as Hindu in Bareilly
Case Summary
In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was befriended and sexually exploited by a Muslim man under the pretext of marriage. The accused posed as a Hindu to deceive her. She was also forced into prostitution and compelled to eat beef, and made to undergo a forced abortion. The woman, from Saheb Bagan in Hooghly district, Kolkata, had divorced her husband in the year 2023 and was raising her five-year-old daughter alone. In the year 2024, she moved to Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, in search of work and was employed at a company for a brief period. During this time, she met the Muslim accused, Bakhtawar, who was pretending to be a Hindu man named Rajveer. According to reports, she met Bakhtawar on social media, where he introduced himself as Rajveer and professed his love for her. She was deceived into a relationship, and the accused established sexual relations with her under the pretext of marriage. When she spoke of marriage, he placed Sindoor, a Hindu religious symbol worn by married Hindu women, in her hair parting and said, “From today, you are my wife.” Subsequently, the Muslim accused took the victim to his village in November 2024. Here she discovered his true identity as Bakhtawar, a Muslim. When she attempted to escape, she was held captive and her mobile phone was taken from her. From that point, she described her life as being made worse than hell. She was given intoxicating pills and forced to do all the household chores. Bakhtawar then forced the woman to be raped by other Muslim men for money. He made this into his business. She stated that within a month of arriving at his home, Bakhtawar began bringing other Muslim men to the house, who repeatedly raped her. Sometimes, several Muslim men would sexually assault her at once. When she pleaded for mercy, she was beaten, and obscene videos of her were filmed. After the woman became pregnant, Bakhtawar and his family took her to a private hospital in Baheri and forced her to undergo an abortion. When she resisted, they beat her severely and kicked her in the stomach. Bakhtawar threatened her, saying, “If you stay pregnant, what will happen to my business? People won’t be able to have relations with you.” The victim stated that Bakhtawar’s entire family was domineering and that his brother threatened to kill her. She expressed that her life was in danger from the accused. The Hindu victim was also forced to eat beef multiple times. Whenever she refused, Bakhtawar, his brother, his mother, and the rest of the family would beat her. She told them, “I am Hindu. In our home, we worship the cow. The cow is our mother, so we cannot eat beef.” Despite this, the family forced beef into her mouth and continued to make her do all the household work. On 18th July 2025, when no one was at home, the Hindu victim managed to escape. She ran straight to Rudrapur and confided in her friend Kajal, who then introduced her to Rajkamal Singh, the state campaigner of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha. That same day, they went to the Baheri police station in Bareilly and submitted a complaint. The police promised to investigate. Following this, a complaint against the accused and his family was registered. Rajkamal Singh of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, a Hindu organisation, stated at the Baheri police station that the accused might be linked to Chhangur Baba, a Muslim Peer, famous for forcibly converting several Hindus to Islam. He urged the police to arrest the accused swiftly so that further facts could be uncovered. He added that it was possible Bakhtawar might have similarly trapped and forcibly converted other girls while pretending to be Hindu. Baheri CO Arun Kumar confirmed that, based on the victim’s complaint, a case was registered at the Baheri police station against Bakhtawar, his brother Tajwar, and their mother. The charges included forced conversion, forcing the victim to eat beef, love jihad, rape, and assault. The police also raided the accused’s home, but the entire family had fled and locked the house. The search for the accused was ongoing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Man pretends to be Hindu. Within this, the tertiary category used is- 'Name Changed' and 'Marries as per Hindu rituals'. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu symbols in relationship. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces insult and desecration of her faith (Hinduism) and its symbol because of the inherent disregard for polytheism of the non-Hindu partner. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts desecrating the religious symbols of the Hindu partner out of spite for her faith. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other subcategory selected is- Brainwashed and/or Groomed. The tertiary category selected is- Rape and sexual assault/harassment. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Forced conversion after marriage. Within this, the tertiary category selected is- Forced to eat beef. In such cases, a non-Hindu man marries a Hindu woman, and the force/pressure to convert to Islam begins after marriage. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship. The marriage could be under the Special Marriages Act, where neither parties are required to convert their religion for the marriage to be considered legitimate. While the victim in such cases enters matrimony assuming that religious identity is not a barrier, the non-Hindu man starts to pressure the woman to convert to Islam after marriage. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both situations, there is application of force by the perpetrator, including the denial of the woman’s religious rights. Some of the means by which the woman is forced/pressured to convert include force-feeding beef, being forced to read the Kalma, being forced to wear a hijab, forced to undergo Halala, etc. There are several instances where, after marriage, the woman voluntarily converts to Islam. Such cases are often argued to be a result of religious brainwashing, however, for the purpose of documenting religiously motivated hate crimes, in the absence of the victim complaining of forced conversion, such cases do not form a part of the database. This case meets multiple parameters of a religiously motivated hate crime. Firstly, the Muslim man deliberately posed as a Hindu to lure the woman into a relationship. Such calculated deception demonstrates clear prejudice and malicious intent towards both the Hindu victim and her faith. By adopting a false Hindu identity, the Muslim perpetrator exploited the victim's trust and specifically targeted her based on her religious identity, indicating a premeditated attack on a Hindu woman and a total disregard for her Hindu faith. The Muslim perpetrator was well aware that the victim, being a Hindu, would not be in a romantic relationship with him if she knew his real identity. So he targeted her by posing as a Hindu. This showcases that the victim was religiously profiled and targeted due to her Hindu identity. Such actions are not random but are directed specifically at individuals because of their religious affiliation. Whenever a man deliberately hides his religious identity to deceive a woman from a different faith into a relationship, he intends to exploit the woman because of her religious identity. This is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. The Muslim perpetrator even performed a fake Hindu marriage ritual by applying sindoor to the woman’s hair parting (maang)—a sacred Hindu symbol of marital status. By engaging in this religious and sacred act under false pretences, the accused not only deceived her about marriage but also desecrated a revered Hindu tradition. Such an act represents a conscious violation and disrespect for the Hindu faith. For Hindu women, sindoor, and what it represents as a religious symbol, is sacred and deeply meaningful. Using it as a tool to deceive, exploit, and enforce a false identity demonstrates a calculated and targeted attack on the Hindu victim because of her faith, making this a clear example of religiously motivated violence. The Muslim perpetrator also sexually exploited and raped the Hindu victim under the pretext of marriage. This was not a random crime but a targeted attack on a Hindu woman using deliberate deception. She was specifically profiled and targeted because of her Hindu identity; such actions are not accidental but directed at individuals strictly due to their religious affiliation. This targeted, sustained abuse is a direct expression of intolerance and animosity towards her Hindu identity. The calculated use of religious impersonation to sexually exploit a Hindu woman under the false promise of marriage marks this as a hate crime directed at a Hindu woman due to her religion. Following this betrayal, the Muslim perpetrator further dehumanised the Hindu woman by forcing her into prostitution and compelling her to have sexual relations with other Muslim men. He commodified her vulnerability, using her isolation and betrayal as further means to violate her dignity. This systematic sexual exploitation was not just for financial gain, but also an expression of religious hostility and intent to degrade her further because of her faith. Additionally, as a practising Hindu, the woman was forced by the Muslim accused and his family to eat beef, an act prohibited in Hinduism, where the cow is considered sacred. Forcing her to consume beef was a deliberate attempt to dishonour her religion and humiliate her. This was not only sacrilegious but also a further tactic to weaken her attachment to her faith and force her towards conversion. Such acts have a precedent in history, where Hindu victims were forcibly fed beef by Muslim extremists to desecrate their beliefs and push them towards abandoning their Hindu faith. In this case, the force-feeding of beef was both an act of grave religious violation and an instrument in attempted forced conversion, shaped by hostility towards the Hindu victim and her faith, rendering this, unequivocally, a religiously motivated hate crime. Throughout these abuses, the victim was repeatedly assaulted, raped and was ever forced to abort her child by the Muslim perpetrator and his family members. Physical violence and harassment were used systematically to subjugate the Hindu woman, crush her spirit, and compel her compliance. These actions were clearly not simply acts of individual violence, but expressions of deep religious animosity. Such acts are committed by Muslim perpetrators due to indoctrination by the Islamic theology, which dehumanises non-Muslim women, in this case, Hindu women, and supports their exploitation at the hands of Muslims. This case, therefore, qualifies as a hate crime because the Muslim accused’s actions were specifically targeted at the Hindu victim’s religious identity and beliefs. This was not an isolated act, but a sustained and systematic pattern of humiliation, exploitation, and an attempt to erase the victim’s faith, fuelled by prejudice and religious animosity. The elements of religious impersonation, desecration of sacred symbols, forced consumption of beef, and systematic sexual and physical abuse all demonstrate a clear intent to target and harm the Hindu woman because of her faith, making it a religiously motivated crime. Given that this case covers several key characteristics of a religiously motivated hate crime, it is being included in the hate crime database. Disclaimer: Media reports do not specify the exact date when the victim’s ordeal began. They only mention that she travelled to Uttarakhand in 2024 after which subsequently lured by the accused. Therefore, for the purpose of documentation, an indicative date of 23rd July 2024 is being used, although the case was reported in the media on 23rd July 2025. Hinduphobia Tracker records the date when the victim's ordeal begins, rather than when it is reported in the media.
