Several severed heads of cows found in village well in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In Meharam village, within the Jaisinghpura police station area of Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, several severed heads of cows were discovered in an old well. According to media reports, as soon as the news of the incident spread, anger erupted among the villagers. A large crowd quickly gathered and blocked the Tanda-Banda National Highway near Dafalpur village. The protesters raised strong slogans against the police administration and demanded strict action against the ongoing incidents of cow slaughter in the area. The villagers stated that cow slaughter had been occurring continuously in the region, but the police merely performed formalities and suppressed the matter. Upon receiving information about the incident, Sub-District Magistrate Jaisinghpur Prashant Singh, Area Officer Ashutosh Kumar, and Kotwali in-charge Satyendra Kumar Singh arrived at the scene and tried to pacify the villagers. However, the people remained steadfast in their demand for concrete action. During this time, Anand Chaitanya, a disciple of social worker Mouni Baba, arrived with his companions, Saurabh Mishra Virat, Mukund Mishra, Praful Chandra Mishra, Dhruv Chandra Mishra, Aryan Singh, Vipin Chaudhary, Sabhajit, Harishyaam Tiwari, and Ashutosh Pandey. All of them appealed to the villagers to maintain peace. Following this, the administration lodged an FIR and assured the villagers that action would be taken within seven days. Police Officer Ashutosh Kumar confirmed that a case had been registered under the relevant sections concerning cow slaughter. Police teams were formed to apprehend the culprits, with the assurance that they would soon be arrested and sent to jail. The villagers also warned the police that if action was not taken within the stipulated time, then their agitation would intensify.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The discovery of several severed cow heads in a well in Meharam village, Uttar Pradesh, raises strong concerns about religious animosity towards Hindus as a potential motive behind the crime. In Hinduism, the cow is regarded as sacred and holds deep religious and cultural significance. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef), and desecrate Hindu temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor. However, in the absence of any concrete evidence that the crime was religiously motivated, this case is being categorised under the 'Undecided' database. If more details emerge that demonstrate religious animosity as a motivating factor behind the crime, then it will be added to the hate crime database.
