Hindu Mahadalit woman gang-raped by Muslim men in Nawada, Bihar
Case Summary
In the Nawada district of Bihar, a Hindu Mahadalit woman was gang-raped by a group of Muslim men. According to media reports, the victim had travelled to Lucknow for medical treatment. From there, she went to her relatives’ house. After spending the night with her relatives in Gaya, she boarded an early morning bus to Nawada. Upon arriving at Sadbhavna Chowk around 8:30 am, she hired an e-rickshaw to reach her home. The driver of the e-rickshaw was a Muslim man who, along with his three Muslim accomplices, conspired to rape the Hindu woman. The Muslim perpetrators took the Hindu woman to a deserted house in Rasul Nagar, where they gang-raped her and fled with her mobile phone. The four perpetrators were identified as Mumtaz Mansuri, Mohammed Sameer, Mohammed Arman, and Mohammed Sabir. All the accused were residents of Nawada. The police were promptly informed of the incident. A case was registered, and all four perpetrators were arrested within 18 hours of the crime. The police had launched raids based on technical surveillance and human intelligence to apprehend the suspects. Nawada Sadar SDPO Hulas Kumar stated, “The incident has been investigated by the forensic and medical teams. The accused are being sent to jail.”
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a Hindu woman was gang-raped by a group of four Muslim men. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu women due to inherent animosity towards Hindus and their faith. Hindu women and girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and sexual assault at the hands of Muslim men. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu woman was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrators. Meanwhile, it could also be argued that for Muslim perpetrators, a Muslim woman would likely be more accessible than a Hindu woman. The fact that the perpetrators specifically targeted a Hindu woman could suggest religious profiling of the victim. Nevertheless, this remains highly speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. Furthermore, the victim has not made any statements suggesting a religious motive behind the crime. For this reason, this case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If any further information emerges that hints towards a religious motivation behind the crime, then it would be reclassified and included under the hate crime database.
