Case Summary

A young Hindu woman from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, fell victim to calculated religious and sexual exploitation after being deceived by a Muslim man who pretended to be Hindu under the name “Rahul” on Instagram. The perpetrator, later identified as Nadeem Khan, a wedding car service provider from Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, approached the woman through a fake social media profile. Gradually, their interaction evolved into a relationship, during which he promised marriage and engaged in sexual relations with her. After gaining her trust, Nadeem secretly recorded obscene photographs and videos of the woman. Once intimacy had been established, he began threatening to make the material public and used this as leverage to coerce her into religious conversion and Islamic marriage. When the woman asked to visit his home, he repeatedly took her to false addresses to avoid revealing his true identity. Eventually, he brought her to his actual residence, where she learned the full truth that Nadeem was already married, had two children, and was a practising Muslim. His first wife, also a Hindu, was living separately due to an ongoing dispute. Horrified by this revelation, the woman left his house. However, Nadeem continued to harass her, pressuring her to convert to Islam and marry him, while threatening her with the release of her private photos and videos. Five months earlier, the woman had approached the police. At that time, Nadeem gave a verbal assurance that he would delete all objectionable content. Yet, he resumed the same pattern of blackmail soon after, frequently appearing at her home at night and causing public scenes. Overwhelmed by persistent abuse, the woman ultimately filed a formal complaint at Nagar Kotwali police station. An FIR was registered against Nadeem Khan under charges of rape, cheating, criminal intimidation, and violations under the Information Technology Act. He was then arrested.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The first subcategory in this case is: Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary categories under this are: Name changed, and Pattern of targeting Hindus. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The second subcategory under this is: Forced conversion before marriage. The tertiary category under this is: Forced to do Nikah. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurising the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The third subcategory under this is: Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. This case is not merely one of personal betrayal or criminal misconduct in a private relationship. It demonstrates a deliberate and sustained pattern of targeting Hindu women through religious deception, coercion, and sexual exploitation. The perpetrator, Nadeem Khan, did not approach the victim with transparency but assumed a false Hindu identity, “Rahul,” to gain the woman’s trust and initiate a relationship under false pretences. This calculated misrepresentation of religious identity was not incidental; it was foundational to his ability to lure the woman into intimacy. Once emotional and physical dependence had been established, the man abandoned all pretence and began applying pressure for religious conversion. When persuasion was not sufficient, he escalated to blackmail using obscene photos and videos recorded without consent. The intent was not merely to compel silence or compliance in a relationship but to ensure that the woman, having once been deceived into the bond, would find no avenue of escape without enduring the threat of public humiliation. This exploitative strategy, initiated with a false name and culminating in demands for conversion and Nikah, constitutes religious coercion. Further, the discovery that Nadeem had previously married another Hindu woman, who later separated from him, reveals a recurring pattern rather than an isolated incident. This prior relationship suggests a consistent method of targeting Hindu women, concealing religious identity, and ultimately demanding conversion after intimacy is established. The repetition strengthens the inference that the deception was not motivated by personal affection but by a communal or ideological impulse to entrap women of another faith, break their social and religious continuity, and absorb them into a different religious order through psychological pressure and sexual blackmail. The woman’s consistent resistance, her decision to approach the police, and her complaint citing religious deception and blackmail underscore that her Hindu identity was central to the abuse. This was not a breakdown of trust between two individuals of different backgrounds; it was an orchestrated violation based on the targeted exploitation of a Hindu woman’s vulnerability for the purpose of religious conversion. The presence of threat, concealment, coercion, and repeated targeting of women from one particular religious group gives this crime its communal character and classifies it unequivocally as a religious hate crime.
