Calf rescued from slaughter attempt in Ambedkar Nagar; two cow smugglers arrested
Case Summary
In Baskhari, Uttar Pradesh, two cow smugglers were arrested by the police for attempting to slaughter a calf. Sub-Inspector Prem Bahadur Yadav reported that the police received information from an informant that two young men were preparing to slaughter a calf in the forest near the Dondo Canal. The police then reached the location and found the accused had tied the calf to a tree. Nearby, there was a plastic tarp laid out, with a knife and a wooden stand placed on it. The police team apprehended Mohammad Hasim and Sajid Ansari from the forest near the Dodo Bypass Canal. Both were identified as residents of Bhulepur, under the Hanswar police station, Ambedkar Nagar district. From the accused, two knives, a cleaver, a wooden stand, rope, and a plastic tarp were recovered. The rescued calf was sent to the nearby Kasadaha cow shelter. According to Station House Officer (SHO) Sant Kumar Singh, a case was registered against the accused under the Cow Slaughter Prevention Act, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and the Arms Act. Further investigation was ongoing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered and smuggled illegally by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter and smuggling are used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter or smuggling, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor; however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, then it would be reclassified under the Hate Crime database.
