Hindu woman targeted for religious conversion and Nikah by Muslim politician; forced to recite Kalma, keep Roza and offer namaz
Case Summary
In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was raped and forced to convert to Islam by a Muslim politician and advocate named Jalaluddin. The victim revealed that the accused threatened and pressured her to convert to Islam. According to media reports, the accused, Jalaluddin, was a Congress leader and advocate. The victim was a resident of the Shahganj police station area in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. In July 2019, the Hindu victim was going through a land dispute with her brothers when she met Jalaluddin in the District Court, who promised to help her and gained her trust. She remained in touch with Jalaluddin, who would often visit her home. In September 2019, the accused took her to the Congress office, situated on MG Road, on the pretext of getting some medicines for her. Thereafter, he raped her at gunpoint. The victim did not disclose the incident to anyone due to social stigma. Following this, the accused was emboldened and he raped her on several occasions. Reports suggest that the victim lived with her mother and her daughter. Her husband lived in Gujarat. She stated that the accused used to barge into her house and offer namaz. He even forced her to recite the Kalma, keep Roza, and offer namaz. He pressured her to marry him after converting to Islam. Jalaluddin then showed up at her house uninvited and threatened to defame her. The victim said that Jalaluddin once tried to attack her with a knife at her home when she stopped him from offering namaz inside her house. She said that she had CCTV footage of the incident. The victim was also subjected to physical violence at the hands of the accused when she refused to offer namaz. The victim was so scared of the accused that she would get her home locked from the outside so that Jalaluddin would think that no one was there at her home. Troubled by the harassment, she approached the police to file a complaint against Jalaluddin on 2nd July 2025, but the police did not file her complaint. Later on, she wrote a letter to the SDM narrating her ordeal, after which a case was registered by the police against the accused, Jalaluddin.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Predatory Proselytisation. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. The other subcategory selected is- Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. Within this, the tertiary category selected is- Rape and sexual assault/ harassment. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This incident is a stark demonstration of a religiously motivated crime against a Hindu woman. The sexual violence, followed by intense religious intimidation by the Muslim perpetrator, makes it clear that her religious identity was the primary reason that she was targeted by the Muslim accused. The forced conversion was not merely a change of faith but an imposition of religious practices such as keeping Roza (fasting during Ramadan) and offering Namaz (Islamic prayers), which she was compelled to adopt against her will. This coercion directly infringed upon her religious freedom, stripping her of the right to practice her own faith and maintain her religious identity. The use of force in converting her, along with compelling her to observe Islamic rituals, demonstrates an attempt to erase her Hindu identity and impose Islamic practices upon her. When she resisted these impositions, the accused resorted to violence, further highlighting the underlying religious intolerance. This physical assault is not just an act of domestic abuse; it is deeply intertwined with religious bigotry, as it was triggered by her refusal to abandon her faith and conform to his demands. This case exemplifies a religiously motivated hate crime because it involves the deliberate targeting of an individual’s religious identity, by the use of deception to manipulate and control, and the imposition of religious practices through force and violence. The intent to convert her forcibly and the subsequent punishment for resisting highlight a deep-seated contempt for her Hindu faith, making this a clear case of religious hatred and bigotry. Disclaimer: Media reports do not mention the exact date when the victim's ordeal began. It only mentions that she was subjected to rape by a Muslim perpetrator on September 2019. Therefore, we are using an indicative date of 1st September 2019, even though the media reported it on 6th July 2025. The Hinduphobia Tracker records the date when the crime actually occurred rather than the date when it was reported in the media.
