Hindu woman deceived, raped, and forcibly converted by Muslim man posing as Hindu; forced to eat beef and perform Nikah

Case Summary
In Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was deceived, emotionally manipulated, and physically tortured for the purpose of religious conversion by a Muslim man named Danish. The accused posed as a Hindu to trap the woman. He also forced her to eat beef and perform Nikah. According to the complaint filed by the victim, the Hindu woman met the Muslim accused in 2016, when he introduced himself as a Hindu man named Rahul. Gradually, he lured her into a relationship and talk of marriage came up. During these marriage talks, somehow the victim discovered his real identity, that he was a Muslim, and his real name was Danish. Initially, she refused both marriage and religious conversion, but Danish emotionally manipulated her by threatening to commit suicide. A Maulvi was brought to perform the Nikah, during which her name was changed to Arsi, and she was converted to Islam. After the marriage, she was forced to wear a burqa and read namaz. When she resisted these efforts, her mother-in-law, Munni, brutally assaulted her. The victim also stated that he was forced to eat beef and was physically tortured. Furthermore, the victim stated that Danish used to have unnatural sex him, including anal sex, which led to serious injuries. Additionally, while the victim was alone at home, her brother-in-law Nazim raped her. Despite becoming a mother to a son in 2018 and a daughter in 2020, the abuse continued. Each time she attempted to escape, Danish would catch her and beat her severely. On June 30, 2025, the woman managed to escape and return to her parental home, where she submitted a detailed written complaint to the police. As of the date of writing this report, a complaint was registered by the police, and the investigation was ongoing, based on which appropriate legal action will be taken.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is:- Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being: - Name changed When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The second sub-category selected: - Forced conversion before marriage, with the tertiary category being: - Forced to do Nikah, Forced to eat beef, Forced to follow non-Hindu religious practices and Forced to wear hijab. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The third sub-category selected here is: - Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu woman was manipulated, forcibly converted, tortured and raped by a Muslim man posing as Hindu. The perpetrator deliberately concealed his religious identity to initiate and sustain a relationship with a Hindu woman. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. The woman was emotionally blackmailed into marriage when the accused threatened to kill himself. However, the abuse did not end with the marriage. She was forced to wear a burqa, perform namaz, and was physically tortured; acts that were designed to erode her Hindu identity and to mentally break her and force her into submission. Changing her name to 'Arsi' was also an attempt to alienate her from her cultural roots, thereby erasing any connection she has with her Hindu identity. One of the most severe aspects of the case is the forced consumption of beef—a direct assault on her religious beliefs. Here, this method was used not merely to shame or hurt the victim but to intentionally defile her religious beliefs so as to convert her. Forcing a Hindu to consume beef is not only a profound disrespect to their religious beliefs but also constitutes a religiously motivated hate crime. In Hinduism, cows are revered as sacred animals, symbolising life and sustenance, and the act of consuming beef is considered highly sacrilegious by many Hindus. Therefore, compelling a Hindu to eat beef goes beyond mere dietary imposition; it is an intentional violation of their religious principles and an assault on their cultural and spiritual identity. The accused also sexually exploited her to the extent that her body was seriously harmed. His acts prove that he never had any interest in a genuine relationship with a Hindu girl; instead, his only goal was sexual exploitation and religious conversion. In such cases, the girls are not treated as genuine partners, but rather as instruments for fulfilling a religious agenda. The purpose is not emotional or personal but strategic. The ultimate goal is to alienate the victim from her Hindu faith and assimilate her into a different religious identity. Once that goal is achieved, the victim is frequently discarded, as her "use" in this ideological mission is considered complete. This pattern stems from a supremacist interpretation of Abrahamic religious doctrine, where those who do not follow the same faith are viewed as inferior, impure, or needing to be corrected. In such a worldview, conversion is not an invitation—it is an obligation. The non-believer is not respected as different, but is dehumanised until they conform. As a result, Hindus are often targeted not for personal reasons but because of their religious identity. The violence, manipulation, and betrayal involved in these cases are not isolated acts of cruelty—they are manifestations of an underlying ideological hostility towards Hinduism, its traditions, and its followers. This is why such cases must be recognised and documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. The victims are not just exploited individuals—they are Hindus targeted for being Hindu. Disclaimer: Media reports state that the victim's ordeal began when she met the accused in 2016, though no exact date or month is provided. To document this case, we have used an indicative date—July 3, 2016—as a placeholder to represent the beginning of her suffering. While media coverage of the incident emerged on July 3, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
