Hindu women targeted and exploited by Muslim man using fake Hindu identity and posing as cop across four states

Case Summary
A 32-year-old Muslim man named Naushad Tyagi from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on 1st July 2025, for deceiving and exploiting at least 20 women across four states. He posed as a Hindu man by using fake names such as “Rahul Tyagi” and “Ricky Tyagi” and impersonated a police constable using a stolen uniform belonging to his friend to entrap the woman. Naushad began this impersonation in Sambhal in 2019 when his constable friend left his uniform behind during election duty. Naushad took the uniform, forged signatures, and began presenting himself as an SOG constable. He used this false identity and a fake Hindu name to lure women, especially widows and those living apart from their husbands, by gaining their trust through social media and initiating romantic relationships. He operated across Mathura, Noida, Sambhal, Ghaziabad, Delhi, Assam, and Meghalaya. He had three fabricated nameplates and wore whichever suited his target. The uniform gave him a false sense of credibility and access, which he further bolstered by associating with real police officers. In several cases, Naushad developed physical relations with the women he deceived and stole valuables from them. His fraud came to light when he duped a widow who owned a grocery shop. He convinced her of his intent to marry her and stole Rs 2.75 lakh and gold jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh. However, when the accused went back on his word, the victim filed a complaint against him. Naushad was apprehended while planning to escape and target another woman. His phone contained objectionable photos and videos of several women. Naushad was booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating, impersonation, and criminal breach of trust. The police confirmed he was a repeat offender and continued investigating his previous criminal history. His actions reveal a systematic pattern of deception targeting vulnerable women under false religious and professional identities.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category in this case is: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Under this, the secondary category is: Man pretends to be Hindu, the tertiary category is: Name changed, and Pattern of targeting Hindu women. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, to document hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the Muslim perpetrator hid his true identity to trap the Hindu victims. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs, and this is why this case has been added here. Here, it is important to note that the Muslim perpetrator is a repeat offender. He had previously also targeted many Hindu women. When a perpetrator specifically targets women of a particular faith, the crime transcends mere random violence; it becomes an act deeply rooted in religious intolerance. Such targeting is not only an attack on the individual but also a symbolic assault on the entire community that the victim represents. The perpetrator’s actions may be driven by a desire to assert religious superiority, to humiliate the community, or to forcefully impose their own beliefs on others. This is particularly evident when the crime involves elements like forced conversion, physical or sexual violence, or psychological manipulation intended to strip the victim of her religious identity. This type of targeted violence is not just an individual crime but a hate crime with broader social and religious implications. It stems from the perpetrator's deep animosity towards the victim's faith. This is why this case has been included in the tracker. Disclaimer: Here, it becomes important to note that none of the media reports on this case mention the exact date when Naushad started his deception, but they mention the year 2019. Therefore, to document this case, we have chosen July 1, 2019, as a placeholder to represent the beginning of this deception. While media coverage of the incident emerged on July 3, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
