Case Summary

In Vidya Nagar, Hubballi, a young woman was harassed and tortured by a Muslim man for rejecting his advances. Reports indicate that the victim, deeply disturbed by the ordeal, attempted suicide. Both the victim and the accused, Siraj, hail from the same town. The victim was pursuing a paramedical course and had known Siraj for some time. Siraj had been pressuring her to enter a relationship and, upon facing rejection, began harassing and torturing her. It is further reported that he had also blackmailed her using private photos. On the occasion of Ramzan, Siraj went to the college in Hubballi where the victim was studying and launched a brutal attack on her. Following this relentless harassment, the victim attempted suicide by consuming pills in her college hostel. She is currently undergoing treatment at KMC Hospital. The victim’s family, devastated by the incident, is demanding strict action against Siraj. Upon learning of the case, Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar visited KIMS Hospital to inquire about the victim’s health and gather details of the incident. Speaking to the media, he confirmed that a case was registered at Vidya Nagar Police Station and that the accused has already been arrested. He also stated that since the Neha Hiremath case, awareness programs have been conducted for college students and parents, emphasising the need for public cooperation with law enforcement to prevent such incidents in the future. Neha Hiremath was stabbed to death on 18th April by Fayaz at B V Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology in Hubbali, where the two were studying, and the entire incident was captured on camera. She was rejecting his overtures to get into a relationship, despite his persistent pestering. He killed her because he was reportedly dismayed and angry after he had been pursuing and stalking her for several months. Following her death, Niranjan Hiremath, the father of the deceased, had stated to the media that his daughter was forced to convert her religion, and she refused.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, there is a strong suspicion that the Muslim man was targeting the Hindu girl for her religious identity. It is often seen in such cases that the one-sided persuasion by the Muslim perpetrator stems from the demands to convert the Hindu woman and the doctrinal dehumanisation of Hindu women in Islam. However, from the available information, we cannot conclusively state that a religious motive was involved. The family of the victim, too, has not made any statement to that effect. For that reason, this case is being added to the undecided database. If more information emerges, the case would be added to the hate crime database.
