Hate speech against Hindus
Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith

Case Summary

In Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, the private school owner of Joy Senior Secondary School, Abhishek Meban, shared an offensive remark about Lord Ram on his WhatsApp status. The derogatory post read, "Bloody Hindu Ram’s bastard children." Meban posted the objectionable WhatsApp status about Lord Ram in response to an incident in which Christian priests were assaulted for an alleged conversion attempt of around 50 tribal people whom they were taking in a bus. This inflammatory remark went viral, sparking protests from Hindu groups, who accused him of insulting their faith. In response, members of organisations such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal gathered at the school, vandalising property, smashing windows, and tearing down the main gate’s signage. Viewing this as a deliberate insult to Hindu beliefs, protestors stormed the school premises in Vijayanagar, demanding action against the school director. The protest, which lasted for nearly two hours, saw significant property damage before law enforcement intervened. Despite the police presence, tensions remained high, necessitating additional security reinforcements to control the situation. Officers managed to disperse the agitated crowd and restore order. Meanwhile, members of the Christian community lodged a formal complaint with the Superintendent of Police, condemning the vandalism and seeking justice. DSP assured that the situation was under control and stated that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the complaints received. Meban had been on the run since the incident. He had switched off his mobile phone to avoid being traced by the police. Several teams of police were on the lookout for him. The police received some input about Meban having boarded a flight to Kochi in Kerala. His location was eventually traced in Kerala when he tried to make a call to a friend. The Madhya Pradesh police coordinated with the Kerala police to locate and arrest him. He was arrested at the Kochi airport by the CISF.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category- Hate speech against Hindus. The sub-category relevant in this case is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This incident clearly qualifies as a hate crime under the category of Hate Speech Against Hindus. The statement posted by Abhishek Meban — "Bloody Hindu Ram’s bastard children" — is a direct insult to both the Hindu community and Lord Ram, who is one of the most respected deities in Hinduism. This kind of language is not just offensive, but hateful, and shows clear contempt for Hindu beliefs. Mocking Lord Ram in such a vulgar way is seen by Hindus as an attack on their entire religion. It goes beyond personal opinion and becomes a deliberate attempt to provoke, hurt, and demean an entire religious group. These kinds of slurs have a history of being used to spread hatred and justify discrimination against Hindus. Because it targets Hindu identity and ridicules sacred beliefs, this incident deserves to be included in the Hinduphobia Tracker.
