Hindu organisation says Hindu woman lured, kidnapped, and converted by Muslim man

Case Summary
In the Nawabganj police station area of Bahraich, a Hindu woman named Sunita Verma was reportedly lured, abducted, forced to convert to Islam, and coerced into having sexual relations with a Muslim man named Ansar. Sunita was the wife of Pappu Kumar Verma, a Hindu activist and member of the Bajrang Dal and International Hindu Council. According to media reports, Sunita's husband, Pappu Kumar Verma accused Ansar of kidnapping his wife with the intention of forcibly converting her to Islam. Ansar is also said to have looted Sunita, taking away her jewellery and cash. These items included a 20-gram gold chain, six pairs of silver anklets, three mangalsutras, gold earrings, a gold nose ring, and Rs 70,000 in cash. A video posted on Dainik Bhaskar’s news report stated that Ansar lured and kidnapped Sunita to force her to adopt Islam and have a sexual relationship with him. The victim's husband along with Hindu activists lodged a complaint at the Nawabganj police station. However, the police neither recovered the woman nor arrested the accused, Ansar. This inaction of the police outraged the Hindu activists. Santosh Singh, the block president of the International Hindu Council, along with Pappu Kumar Verma, began a hunger strike in protest of the police's inaction. Santosh Singh stated that his fast would continue until the woman was safely returned and action was taken against the kidnapper. He also called upon all Hindu organisations to join in the fast.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, it is alleged that a Hindu woman was lured, kidnapped and forced to convert to Islam. The woman was an adult, married and it was discovered that valuable belongings were also missing along with the woman. In this case, it is pertinent to note that there was is no testimony of the woman herself. Given that she was an adult, it is entirely possible that the decision to elope with the Muslim man and the subsequent conversion, if any, was a result of a voluntary decision by her. Given the lack of additional information, this case is being added to the 'undecided' database. If more information emerges in the form of the woman's testimony or other circumstantial evidence, this case would be added to the hate crime database.
