Case Summary

A minor Dalit Hindu girl from Sarangpur, Madhya Pradesh, was befriended and later molested by a 16-year-old Muslim boy named Javed, who blackmailed her by threatening to make her photos public. According to media reports, the girl was a 10th-grade student, while the accused Muslim boy was a 9th-grade student. They became friends on Instagram, and he later travelled to Sarangpur to meet her. During their meeting, he took some photos with her. But later, when the girl wanted to end the friendship, the accused threatened to release the photos online. She begged him to delete them, but he refused. Later, her brother called the boy to persuade him to delete the images, but the call was answered by the accused’s father, who then threatened the girl’s brother. Following this, the accused had called the victim and ordered her to come to Shujalpur by bus, threatening to make her photos go viral if she refused. He was already waiting at Akodia Naka when she arrived. The girl pleaded with him to delete the photos, but instead, he took her to a café. They sat at a table, and she repeatedly asked him to delete the images. However, the accused grabbed her hand and began molesting her. When the victim screamed, passersby Devpal Singh and Deepak Sharma intervened to help. The accused was beaten, and he was forced to say that "Love jihad is a sin". Subsequently, the accused managed to flee the scene. Thereafter, the girl's brother registered a case against the minor Muslim boy under the POCSO Act and the SC/ST Act. The police also filed a case of intimidation against the accused’s father for threatening the victim’s brother.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This incident could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu women and minor girls due to inherent animosity towards the Hindu community. It could also be argued that for a Muslim perpetrator, a Muslim girl would likely be more accessible than a Hindu girl. The fact that the Muslim perpetrator specifically targeted a Hindu girl suggests religious profiling of the victim. However, it is equally possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu girl was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Nevertheless, this remains speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. Moreover, neither the police nor the victim's family has made any statements suggesting that the crime was religiously motivated. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that demonstrates that the crime was religiously motivated, then it would be reclassified and included under the hate crime database.
