Hindu temple demolished by local authorities in the name of ‘development,’ while mosque remained untouched
Case Summary
In Muzaffarpur, Bihar, an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman was demolished within the premises of a railway station under orders from local authorities. The temple was removed under the pretext of ‘development’ while a nearby mosque remained untouched, sparking widespread outrage among the local Hindu community. The temple, along with idols of Hindu deities, was destroyed, drawing strong condemnation from VHP District President Sandeep Singh. He stated, “The temple was demolished in the name of development, but it must be rebuilt.” Hindu organisations responded by staging protests, demanding the immediate reconstruction of the temple and condemning the biased actions of the authorities. A protest procession began at 9 AM from Saraiyaganj Tower, passing through Chhoti Saraiyaganj and Jawaharlal Road before reaching Kalyani Chowk. Demonstrators raised slogans against the railway authorities and the Railway Ministry, accusing them of discrimination toward Hindu places of worship. In response, the police deployed 670 officers following directives from the District Magistrate (DM) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). SSP Sushil Kumar assured the public, “Additional forces have been deployed to maintain law and order.” Security was tightened at the railway station, and police, RPF, and GRP personnel were on high alert to prevent any unrest.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The sub-category relevant in this case is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbols. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other sub-category selected is - Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, the demolition of the temple also involved the destruction of idols and sacred representations of Hindu deities, which are central to Hindu worship and spirituality. In Hinduism, religious icons and symbols such as murtis are not mere objects but embodiments of divine presence, integral to daily rituals and faith. The targeted destruction of these revered symbols reflects an act driven by hostility toward the Hindu faith itself. Such desecration of Hindu religious icons and symbols is therefore classified as a religiously motivated hate crime, as it attacks not only physical objects but also the spiritual core and identity of the Hindu community. Temples hold profound religious significance in Hinduism as sacred abodes of the Divine, believed to be infused with the deity’s divine energy. The temple premises are considered holy and are central to the community’s faith and religious practices. The deliberate demolition of the Hanuman temple is a direct assault on this sacred space and, by extension, on the Hindu religion itself. An attack on a temple is inherently an attack on the faith and devotion of its followers, motivated by animosity toward Hindu Dharma. Hence, such actions qualify unequivocally as religiously motivated hate crimes targeting Hindu places of worship. The deliberate demolition of the ancient Hanuman temple while leaving the adjacent mosque untouched clearly demonstrates discriminatory treatment against the Hindu community. By selectively targeting a sacred Hindu site under the guise of development, yet sparing the mosque, the authorities have shown bias in their actions, undermining the principle of equal respect for all religious places. Hence, this case is added to the hate crime database.
