Hindu woman lured into relationship under pretext of marriage, converted to Islam and killed by her Muslim husband

Case Summary
A Hindu woman named Loganayagi was lured into a relationship on the pretext of marriage by a Muslim named Abdul Hafeez. She was converted to Islam and killed by Hafeez and his Muslim lover named Dhaviya Sultana. Sultana's friend Monisha was also an accomplice in the crime. According to media reports, Abdul Hafeez met Loganayaki on Instagram. The accused lured her into a relationship and convinced her to convert to Islam. She adopted a new name, Albiya and started wearing a burqa. Some days later, Loganayaki discovered that Hafeez was already in a relationship with a Muslim woman named Dhaviya Sultana. This created problems in their relationship, and she confronted Hafeez to marry her. Hafeez, at this point, conspired to kill Loganayaki. He fabricated a story to justify his crime. He told Monisha and Dhaviya Sultana that Loganayagi had murdered his brother after marriage by striking him with a glass bottle. Due to this deception, Monisha and Dhaviya agreed to help him in murdering Loganayaki. The trio convinced Loganayaki to travel with them to Salem in a driverless cab. They injected her with poison, and she immediately died. Some media reports claimed that the victim was injected with air, leading to an embolism and immediate death. After killing her, they dumped her body in a 20-foot gorge and then fled to Trichy. The locals discovered the decomposed body of Loganayaki, and they reported it to the police. The police also found a missing complaint report from a hostel in Salem, where the victim resided. The police identified the victim with her ID card, found in her purse. The police investigated the call records, digital footprints, and confessions and arrested Abdul Hafeez, Dhaviya Sultana, and Monisha on 5th March 2025. The trio was charged under relevant sections of the BNS, including Section 302 (murder), Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), and Section 201 (destruction of evidence). Police also investigated the link of the trio with radical outfits. A senior police officer stated, “This is not an isolated case. Love Jihad-related crimes have been increasing despite widespread awareness. The modus operandi remains the same—grooming young Hindu women, forcing conversion under the pretext of marriage, and eliminating them when they resist or demand commitment." Activists and social observers stated that such cases of Hindu women getting entrapped into a relationship with Muslim men by use of deceit had become a pattern. In such relationships, Hindu women were assaulted, converted and in many cases killed. The Campus Friends of India (CFI), an offshoot of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), was also accused of running conversion rackets in educational institutions. One of the Hindu activists stated, “This is not just about one woman. This is a systemic issue where Hindu women are being targeted, manipulated, and ultimately eliminated. We demand stringent action and a nationwide law to curb such incidents."
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under two prime categories of the tracker. The first is- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Under this, the sub-category selected is- Forced conversion before marriage and the tertiary category chosen is- Forced to follow non-Hindu religious practices. A hate crime is supposed to have taken place when the perpetrator intentionally targets an individual owing to his/her bias against a certain characteristic of that individual or his/her declared hatred towards that characteristic. A religious hate crime is one where the offence is committed against an individual or a group or an individual or a group of people are targeted specifically because of their religious identity. In cases where religiously motivated hate crimes against Hindu women in relationships are committed, it is seen that the perpetrator targets the victim specifically because of her religious identity of being a Hindu and is therefore a hate crime. In this category, we would also add cases where women have been subjected to sexual crimes owing to religious hate/animosity,, but were not in a relationship with the perpetrator. In such cases, there would have to be a specific marker of religious animosity as a motivation for the crime. For example, grooming young Hindu girls for sexual exploitation with the non-Hindu perpetrator targeting Hindu girls specifically, non-Hindu perpetrator targeting Hindu women as a pattern, or, for example, rape as a weapon used against women with religious hate as the motivation. Since the religious identity of the victim is the primary marker owing to which the perpetrator targeted the victim, it would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The second category selected here is- Attack resulting in death. This case follows a disturbing pattern where Hindu women are deceived, coerced into conversion, and ultimately eliminated when they resist or demand accountability. The Hindu victim was systematically lured into a deceptive relationship under the false promise of marriage, coerced into converting to Islam, and made to abandon her Hindu identity, adopting the name "Albiya" and wearing a burqa. The forced imposition of Islamic practices upon her—without her informed consent—illustrates the predatory nature of the conversion, marking it as a case of coercive religious subjugation. Beyond the initial deception, the violence inflicted upon Loganayagi highlights an alarming pattern in which Hindu women are not only groomed and converted but also face fatal consequences when they assert agency over their lives. When Loganayagi discovered Hafeez's existing relationship with a Muslim woman and demanded marriage, she was seen as an obstacle and subsequently eliminated. The crime committed against Loganayagi clearly illustrates that the primary motive of the accused was to alienate the victim from her Hindu faith before ultimately disposing of her when she was no longer of use to him. His actions demonstrate a calculated attempt to erase her Hindu identity, which is a fundamental marker of a religiously motivated hate crime. The entire trajectory of this crime—from religious coercion to its ultimate elimination—demonstrates a targeted act of hatred against the victim’s faith, making it a clear case of religiously motivated violence. It follows a disturbing trend where Hindu women are entrapped, converted, and, in extreme cases, killed once they resist or demand equal treatment in the relationship. It exposes the systematic targeting of Hindu women through deception, grooming, and conversion under duress and this is why it has been added to the tracker.
