Case Summary
In a major cow smuggling case from Narora, Anupshahr, court sentenced the main accused, Munshad, to three years in prison and fined him ₹5,050. The case dates back to March 22, 2014, when police intercepted a truck at Hameed intersection carrying 39 injured cows. The truck driver attempted to escape, even trying to run over officers, but was eventually stopped by local residents near the Ganga Barrage Bridge. The smugglers admitted to drugging the cows with doda poppy to render them unconscious before transporting them for slaughter in Sambhal. The injured cattle were sent to Gopalji Gaushala. A case was registered under multiple sections, including 307 (attempt to murder), 420 (fraud), 467, 468, and 471, along with the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act and Animal Cruelty Act.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it would be added to the Hate Crime Database.
