Case Summary

A Hindu woman, Deep Sikha, also known as Rekhi Awasthi, was brutally attacked by four Muslim youths after she objected to being pushed by their ambulance. The incident occurred in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh. In a video shared by Treeni, the victim, lying on a hospital bed, recounted what transpired. She said she lives in a Muslim-majority area which is why no one came forward to help her. In the FIR, a copy of which is with the Hinduphobia tracker team, the victim stated that the assault took place around 8:45 pm on February 21 while she was returning from the market. As she made her way back home, she had a minor collision with an ambulance. When she politely asked the driver to be more careful, Mohd Aamir and his three accomplices became furious and began verbally abusing her. When she protested, Mohd Aamir and his associate stepped out of the vehicle and attempted to molest her. The accused snatched her gold chain and then physically assaulted her. She described how they kicked her, punched her, and pulled her hair. The victim further mentioned that the accused and his associates appeared to be intoxicated. Upon hearing of the attack, the victim's brother rushed to the scene. However, when he tried to intervene and protect his sister, he too was assaulted. The accused then issued death threats before fleeing. Speaking to the media, the victim also noted that despite the assault happening in public, no bystanders stepped in to help, likely due to the area's predominantly Muslim population. In response to the incident, Fatehpur Police stated on X on February 22 that, based on the written complaint received at Kotwali Nagar Police Station, an FIR (No. 62/25) has been registered under sections 115(2)/352/351(2)/74/304 of the BNS. The police further confirmed that the named accused had been arrested, the ambulance had been seized, and legal proceedings were underway.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The altercation stemmed from a minor accident, which would not usually escalate to such extreme violence, molestation, and death threats unless there was an underlying hostility or added animosity. The disproportionate aggression raises suspicion that the attack may have been driven by factors beyond the immediate dispute, possibly linked to the victim's religious identity or the broader context of tensions in the area. Further, the victim herself, testified that she was attacked in a Muslim-dominated locality where no one helped her. This aligns with a broader pattern seen in other religiously motivated hate crimes where Hindus are targeted due to their religious identity. While these factors suggest the possibility of religious hostility, since there are no explicit religious markers—such as caste-based slurs or a direct attack on the victim's Hindu identity—this case is being placed in the 'Undecided' database for now. If further evidence surfaces confirming a religious motive, it will be reclassified accordingly in the hate crime database.
