Islamists display deep-rooted hatred for Hindus: 'F*ck ISKCON' appears on digital board in Bangladesh
Hate speech against Hindus
Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith

Case Summary

In a blatant display of anti-Hindu hatred, a board stating 'F*ck Iskcon' written in Bengali, was displayed at a petrol pump in Madaripur district in Bangladesh. This clearly shows that the hate for ISKCON in Bangladesh has skyrocketed. Islamism of Muslims in Bangladesh has led to a dire situation against the Hindu minorities. Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, 2024, Bangladesh has plunged into chaos as Islamist extremists have taken advantage of the political turmoil to unleash a wave of terror and violence against the Hindu community. The Islamist mobs have attacked Hindu homes, burned them to the ground, and abducted women in a horrific descent into anarchy. Several temples have been destroyed in various parts of the Islamic country in a major crackdown on Hindus. Further, the arrest of Hindu priests has exacerbated the situation, with Hindu minorities protesting across Bangladesh seeking justice.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category of- Hate speech against Hindus. Under this, the sub-category selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. The blatant display of anti-ISKCON hatred in Bangladesh, as evidenced by the board stating "Fck ISKCON"* in Bengali at a petrol pump in Madaripur district, underscores the escalating hostility towards Hindus in the country. This incident is not an isolated act of vandalism but a reflection of the growing radicalisation and Islamism that has engulfed Bangladesh, further worsening the plight of Hindu minorities. The rise in open hostility towards ISKCON, a globally respected Vaishnavite Hindu organisation, is a direct consequence of the deep-seated animosity that Islamists in Bangladesh harbour against Hindus and their institutions. Such open hostility towards ISKCON aligns with the wider anti-Hindu persecution in Bangladesh, where Hindus face constant intimidation, violence, and religious oppression. The destruction of temples, targeted attacks on Hindu homes, and the abduction of Hindu women all point to a coordinated effort to marginalise and erase Hindu identity from the country. By defiling ISKCON, an internationally respected Hindu organisation, these extremists are not just attacking a religious institution but sending a message of contempt and aggression towards Hindus as a whole. Consequently, this case has been added to the tracker.
