Hindutva leader Veer Savarkar insulted by Muslim student of Jamia Milia Islamia
Hate speech against Hindus
Mocking/denigrating Hindu leaders

Case Summary

At the Press Club of India, a Jamia Millia Islamia student named Habiba openly denigrated Hindutva icon Veer Savarkar, dismissing his legacy. Addressing the vice-chancellor of her college, she declared, "We do not accept Savarkar's legacy," further stating that she rejected the legacy of a man who had written mercy petitions to the British during India's struggle for independence. This remark was not only an attempt to belittle Savarkar’s immense sacrifices but also an insult to his relentless struggle against colonial oppression. In doing so, she merely echoed the same contempt and historical distortion that the leftist ecosystem has consistently used to vilify the revered Hindu leader. Savarkar was sentenced to 50 years of imprisonment and transported to the infamous Cellular Jail, known as Kala Pani, on 4th July 1911. The conditions in the jail were inhumane—prisoners were manacled, forced into gruelling labour such as grinding mustard seeds in oil mills and subjected to brutal floggings. Food was infested with worms, light was scarce, and even communication between prisoners was forbidden. Those who protested through hunger strikes were force-fed with rubber catheters inserted through their nostrils. Medical aid was non-existent, and the British ensured that Savarkar, marked as a D (Dangerous) prisoner, suffered the harshest treatment. The intent was clear: he was not meant to leave the prison alive. Yet, despite enduring the horrors of Kala Pani, Savarkar remained committed to the cause of Hindus and the nation. His mercy petitions, which leftists and Islamists weaponise against him, were a tactical ploy akin to Shivaji’s letter to Aurangzeb, strategically written to secure his release and continue his work for the country. Unlike Jawaharlal Nehru, whose imprisonment was far more comfortable—where he enjoyed a private bungalow, curtains of his preferred colour, leisurely gardening, and even the privilege of sentence suspension when his wife was unwell—Savarkar endured unspeakable torment. Upon his release in 1937, he led the Hindu Mahasabha and fought against the Partition of India, resisting communal politics that sought to divide the nation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The case was added to the tracker under the prime category of- Hate speech against Hindus and under this, the sub-category selected is- Mocking/denigrating Hindu leaders. Hate speech is defined as any speech, gesture, conduct, writing, or display that is prejudicial against a specific individual and/or group of people, which is leading to or may lead to violence, prejudicial action or hate against that individual and/or group. Religious leaders are often seen as representatives of the community, especially, the community’s religious faith and beliefs. Mocking or denigrating a religious leader specifically owing to his religious identity and/or the religious rituals he observes can be considered hate speech because the motivating factor of the speech is animosity and/or dislike for what he represents – the religious beliefs and faith of the community. It is important to note that mere insulting words against an individual do not constitute hate speech. It is entirely possible that insulting words are used for an individual, however, the specific speech is not the result of religious hate and/or animosity towards the professed faith of the religious leader, but the individual himself. For the speech to be considered hate speech, the speech itself or the motivating factor behind the speech has to be religious in nature. Such speech which denigrates Hindu religious leaders specifically owing to animosity towards the faith they profess and the community faith they represent will be treated as hate speech under this category. Despite the well-documented atrocities and inhumane torture that Veer Savarkar endured in the Cellular Jail, leftist liberals have consistently demeaned and vilified him, disregarding historical facts that are readily available in the public domain. Their relentless attacks on Savarkar are not merely about political opposition but stem from a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their religious identity. Savarkar was not only a staunch nationalist but also a key figure in Hindutva, a philosophy that seeks to uphold and protect Hindu civilisational values. His contributions to India’s freedom struggle and his sacrifices are undeniable, yet he has been subjected to malicious propaganda and ridicule by the leftist ecosystem, which seeks to erase or distort the history of Hindu resistance against colonial and Islamist oppression. This sustained denigration of Savarkar is part of a larger pattern wherein Hindu icons and leaders are systematically targeted, while leaders of other communities are shielded from scrutiny. The leftist cabal selectively highlights aspects of history that fit their anti-Hindu narrative, ignoring the brutal oppression that Hindu leaders like Savarkar faced at the hands of colonial rulers. The refusal to acknowledge his suffering, his resilience, and his unwavering commitment to India's freedom struggle reflects a deliberate attempt to delegitimise Hindu voices in history. By dismissing the horrors of the Cellular Jail and mocking Savarkar’s struggle, the leftist-liberal ecosystem reveals its inherent bias against Hinduism and its historical figures, exposing its deep-rooted contempt for Hindu identity and heritage.
