Stone-pelted at Hindu home by Muslim mob days after thousands of Muslims attacked police station over a social media status of a Hindu man

Case Summary
In Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, a Hindu household was stone-pelted by Muslims. Muslims shouted religious slogans while stone-pelting and then fled after committing the crime. An X handle named 'The Treeni' posted about this incident. This incident happened in less than a week after a violent Islamic mob launched an attack on the Udayagiri Police Station on Monday (10 February 2025) night in Mysuru, Karnataka, injuring at least 14 police personnel, including two inspectors. This attack was triggered by a WhatsApp status posted by a Hindu youth, Suresh. He had posted a meme about the Delhi Elections 2025. The WhatsApp status, which was titled 'three idiots' had a photoshopped picture of Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, and Akhilesh Yadav wearing skull caps. It also had a person performing namaz and Arabic words were written all over. The post also reportedly contained some remarks against Muslim religious leaders. The Muslim community was outraged by this as they claimed that their religious sentiments were hurt. In one video that went viral on social media, a group of Muslims could be seen demanding the immediate arrest of the Hindu man and the death penalty for the ‘Gustakh-e-Rasool’ (blasphemer of the Prophet).
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category of- Attack not resulting in death. Under this, the sub-category selected is- Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. This case carries religious markers that suggest an element of targeted hostility against Hindus. The act of stone-pelting was not a random act of vandalism but appears to have been specifically aimed at Hindu homes, indicating a deliberate attempt to intimidate and harass members of the Hindu community. Further, this act of stone-pelting on Hindu homes takes on an unmistakable religious dimension when considering that Islamists raised religious slogans while carrying out the attack. The chanting of Islamic slogans during an act of aggression is a well-documented tactic used by radical elements to frame their violence as a religious assertion rather than a mere dispute. By invoking religious slogans, the perpetrators signal that their attack is not just about a personal or local issue but is rooted in a broader ideological hostility against Hindus. The case gains further religious significance when viewed in the context of the violent attack on Udayagiri Police Station by an Islamist mob just days earlier. When a subsequent incident, like the targeted stone-pelting on Hindu houses, occurs in the same timeframe and region, it suggests a spillover of the same religiously motivated hostility. It raises concerns that Hindus in the area are being systematically targeted, either as retaliation for the prior incident or as part of a broader strategy to instil fear and assert dominance. The fact that these incidents occurred in such close succession strengthens the argument that there is an underlying pattern of communal aggression, where Hindus are being subjected to intimidation and violence. Thus, the religious markers, in this case, go beyond just the act of stone-pelting itself—they are part of a larger context of escalating anti-Hindu hostility, where expressions of Hindu identity or dissent are met with violent responses, and where Hindu homes and individuals become deliberate targets. Consequently, this case also qualifies as a religiously motivated hate crime and has been added to the tracker.
