Muslim man attempts to lure Hindu man's son into conversion, traps his wife when the son resists

Case Summary
A tractor driver lured a Hindu man's wife into a love trap and abducted her, intending to convert her to Islam and marry her. The victim's husband has submitted a complaint to the SP, demanding action. In response, the SP has directed the police inspector to investigate the matter. A resident of a village in the Kotwali area stated in his complaint to the SP that a youth from another community, residing in Alipur Jalesar, used to work as a tractor driver in their village. He became acquainted with the complainant’s son under the pretext of teaching him how to drive a tractor and gradually started visiting their house. During his visits, the accused attempted to lure the complainant’s son into converting to Islam, but he resisted. Failing this, the accused turned his attention to the man's wife, entrapped her in a romantic affair, and ultimately abducted her with the intent of conversion and marriage. The woman also took cash and jewellery worth over one lakh rupees with her. The victim demanded immediate action. Police Inspector Alok Kumar Dubey stated that he was unaware of the case. However, SP Vinod Kumar confirmed that the investigation has been assigned to the Gursahaiganj Police Inspector. He assured that appropriate action would be taken if the allegations were found to be true.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category of- Predatory Proselytisation and within this, the sub-category selected is- Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. The tertiary category selected under this is- 'Family claims grooming'. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. The religious markers in this incident that justify this classification stem from the systematic targeting and deception involved in the perpetrator's actions, which exhibit a clear pattern of religiously motivated coercion. The Muslim accused, initially gained the trust of a Hindu family by befriending their son under the guise of teaching him how to drive. However, this friendship was not merely social—it served as a calculated entry point into the household for the explicit purpose of conversion. The accused, at first, attempted to persuade the boy to convert to Islam. When the boy resisted, the accused shifted his focus to the complainant's wife, whom he successfully lured and manipulated. The explicit goal of this act was religious conversion. The details reveal that the accused had religiously profiled his victims before targeting them. This profiling, based on religion, highlights a profound bias, confirming that the attacks were deliberate and not random, thus indicating the religiously motivated nature of the crime. In this case, the minor and the woman were targeted due to their religious identity, driven by the perpetrator's prejudice and animosity toward Hindus. As a result, this incident is classified as a religiously motivated hate crime.
