Pregnant cow brutally killed, stomach ripped open, calf mutilated
Case Summary
A pregnant cow was brutally killed by cow smugglers in Salkod village, Honnavar taluk. The cow’s udders were removed, and its stomach was torn open to extract the calf. The smugglers also severed their heads and legs, taking the flesh while leaving the bones behind. The cow’s owner, Krishna Acharya, who had raised the cow for ten years and treated it as a member of the family, discovered the mutilated body and reported it to the authorities. Local Hindu organisations protested for action after the attack. An FIR was filed by the police after the complaint and protests. Police filed charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and were investigating whether the cow was killed for meat or to provoke unrest in the area.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the category of- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Under this, the sub-category selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered a religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. In Hindu tradition, the cow is revered as a sacred symbol of life and sustenance. They are often referred to as "Gau Mata" (Mother Cow) in Hindu culture and are also associated with divine figures like Kamadhenu, the celestial cow, and Lord Krishna. A prevalent belief in Hinduism, particularly within Indian culture and Sanatan Dharma, is that 33 crore (330 million) deities reside within the cow, though this is often understood to mean 33 specific "types" or categories of gods and goddesses. This belief highlights the cow's sacred status as a divine motherly figure, representing abundance and nourishment. Acts of violence against cows are perceived as an affront to Hindu religious sentiments and beliefs. Here, despite knowing the sacred status of cows in Hinduism, the perpetrators brutally attacked the calf. This deliberate act of injuring and mutilating the bovine carries symbolic weight, as it desecrates an animal venerated in Hinduism. The brutal method of attack further amplifies its severity, with the intent appearing to go beyond mere criminality to a deeper cultural and religious provocation. It is also important to mention here that though the last update was that the miscreants were unknown, regardless, the action stemmed out of hatred against Hinduism and resulted in the desecration of the sacred temple and would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime.
