Case Summary
In Mahuva taluka of Surat district, Gujarat, a minor Hindu girl was deceived, raped and forced to undergo nikah (Islamic marriage ceremony) by a Muslim man named Fayyaz Rafiq Sheikh, who posed as a Hindu. According to reports, the accused lured and deceived the minor victim into a relationship by introducing himself as a Hindu man named Jenish. By deceiving her, the accused repeatedly sexually exploited her for over nine years, under the false promise of marriage. When she became pregnant, he forced her to get an abortion and continued to threaten her into silence. Furthermore, he took her to a Muslim cleric named Mohammad Ujer Sheikh in Sarabhon village, where the victim was forcibly converted to Islam and made to undergo a nikah, in an effort to control her. After prolonged sexual exploitation, the accused threatened her and later abandoned her, prompting her to approach the police. Subsequently, the victim, who at the time of the incident was a minor, filed a complaint with the police, prompting them to register an FIR. During the investigation, police arrested the accused, Fayyaz Rafiq Sheikh, and the Muslim cleric, Mohammad Ujer Sheikh, who conducted the nikah. Police also arrested Shailesh Rathod, a staffer at the Dharampur court, for arranging the abortion despite the girl being a minor. As of the date of writing this report, the investigation is ongoing.

Fifth, the victim was later abandoned by the accused. This proves that the accused was never interested in a genuine relationship with a Hindu girl; instead, his only goal was sexual exploitation and religious conversion. Therefore, this was not simply a matter of personal relationship but a targeted exploitation of a minor Hindu girl because of her religious identity. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Therefore, religious conversions, even of minors, are often seen as a badge of honour, totally disregarding the methods used to achieve it.
