Hindu girl targeted with blackmail and coercion for conversion to Islam; her faith mocked and non-veg forced upon her
Case Summary
In Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, a 23-year-old Hindu girl was blackmailed, exploited and pressured for religious conversion by a Muslim youth named Anas Khan. According to reports, the victim came into contact with the accused through her Muslim female friend, who introduced her to the accused. After the introduction on 5 August 2025, the accused began calling her repeatedly, pressuring her to talk with him. When she told this to her friend, her friend warned the victim that if she didn't talk to Anas, they would malign her reputation by telling wrong things about her to her family members. Under pressure, she began talking to the accused. Manipulating the victim's trust, the accused also extracted ₹10,000 by claiming that he could arrange treatment for her brother’s drug addiction. Gradually, the accused also began pressuring the victim to convert to Islam, claiming that he would marry her. He also manipulated her by claiming that Islam is better than Hinduism and forced her to eat mutton. The accused had obtained a private video of her through which he blackmailed her for conversion and pressured her to meet him at hotels, threatening her that he would make the videos viral. He regularly called her to hotels, demanded money, behaved inappropriately, and attempted to force physical relations. The exploitation went to the point that the victim even attempted suicide. Furthermore, when the victim's brother confronted the accused and attempted to reason with him, the accused threatened him and instead asked him to send his sister to him. When he protested, the accused physically assaulted him. It was revealed that her Muslim female friend had recorded her while she was bathing, and gave it to Anas, through which he blackmailed her. The victim, distressed by the situation, informed members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, a Hindu organisation, explaining that the accused had again demanded ₹35,000 and had called her to meet him at Hotel Adarsh Plaza. Members of the Hindu organisation devised a plan to rescue her and apprehend the accused. They waited nearby while the victim entered the hotel room as instructed. As soon as she raised an alarm, the Hindu activists confronted the accused and apprehended him. They smeared and blackened his face and took him to the police station. As of the date of writing this report, a case has been registered against the accused for blackmail and harassment at the Civil Lines police station. Police stated that objectionable materials were found in his pocket and he was attempting to commit immoral acts.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Brainwashed and/or Groomed, with the tertiary category being - Rape and sexual assault/ harassment and Pattern of targeting Hindu women. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Forced conversion before marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The other subcategory selected is- Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The second primary category selected in this case is - Attack not resulting in death. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu girl was blackmailed, exploited and pressured for religious conversion by the Muslim accused, Anas Khan. Firstly, the accused pressured the victim to convert to Islam, claiming that he would marry her. Pressuring a Hindu individual to discard her religious faith and embrace another is a direct attack on her religious identity and dignity. It was not a matter of personal choice; it was coercion rooted in hostility towards the victim's Hindu identity. Such an attempt reflects religious animosity because the act was not simply about personal differences but about erasing the victim’s Hindu faith, making it a religiously motivated crime. Secondly, in Islam, marriage to a non-Muslim partner is prohibited, which was why she was converted to Islam before marriage. The purpose of forced religious conversion reveals the intent of the accused to strip the victim of her Hindu identity and impose an Islamic one upon her. Forced conversions such as this do not occur in a vacuum; they are rooted in deep‑seated hostility towards the faith of the victim, which makes this a clear case of a crime driven by religious hatred. Thirdly, the Muslim accused obtained private videos of her, through which he blackmailed her for conversion. These exploitations were not random acts of crime; rather, they functioned as religiously motivated tools aimed at humiliating and dominating a Hindu girl because of her faith, with the intention of converting her. The target was not the victim as an individual, but her Hindu identity. The specific focus on her Hindu identity in the commission of these acts highlights the religious hatred underlying the crime, making it a religiously motivated offence. Fourth, the victim was subjected to blackmail, emotional manipulation, financial and sexual exploitation. This exploitation was not random; it was systematic, targeted, and rooted in religious animosity. It was aimed at physical subjugation and religious humiliation of the victim. The intention was to break the victim down, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, making her more susceptible to conversion. Fifth, the accused also forced the victim to eat mutton biryani. This was an effort to humiliate her religious identity. For many Hindus, abstaining from meat is an integral part of devotion and spiritual observance. Violating this discipline is not merely a breach of etiquette but an assault on the cultural and spiritual identity of Hindus. Such deliberate defilement of a Hindu religious practice was not a neutral or isolated act, but it reflects conscious contempt for Hindu beliefs and demonstrates the underlying religious hostility that the Muslim accused had towards the Hindu victim. It was not merely a dietary violation but a targeted attempt to desecrate their faith. Such acts are meant to psychologically break the victim, undermine their devotion, and normalise behaviour that violates their religious conscience. It was used as a tool of religious domination intended to break the victim’s connection to their faith. Sixth, when the victim's brother confronted the accused, the accused threatened him and brutally assaulted him. This was not random violence but was rooted in communal hostility and religious hatred, intended to coerce the victim and her brother into complying with the accused’s demands. Often in such cases, violence serves as a warning to the wider Hindu community that opposing such actions by members of the Muslim community would invite violent retribution. The attack on the victim’s brother represents a coordinated effort to enforce compliance through violence, reinforcing the hate-driven and ideological nature of the crime. It is important to understand here that such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Such acts were not merely personal crimes; they were rooted in a desire to dominate and erase the religious identity of the victim. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. Disclaimer: The perpetrator count for this case has been recorded as two. This includes the main accused as well as the victim’s Muslim friend who filmed her obscene video. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case have specified the exact date when the victim's ordeal began. The earliest date mentioned is 5 August 2025, after which the accused began calling her repeatedly. Since Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began and not when it was reported, we have considered the date of the incident as 5 August 2025, though the media reported the incident on 22 November 2025.
