Hindu activists attacked and beaten for resisting cow smuggling in Jehanabad, Bihar
Case Summary
On 18th November 2025, a group of gau rakshaks from Delhi were attacked by cattle smugglers near Khairadih village, in the Kinjer police station area of Arwal district. Three individuals were seriously injured in the attack. The injured were identified as Yogesh, Anurag, and Surajbhan. The police arrived at the scene and took the three victims to Kinjer Government Hospital. Later, one victim, Anurag, was referred to Arwal Sadar Hospital, as he had sustained a serious head injury. Yogesh had deep injuries to his abdomen, back, and arm, while Surajbhan had internal injuries. All three victims were from the Hauz Khas village in the Safdarjung area of Delhi and were members of the Gau Gyaan Foundation, an organisation that works to prevent animal smuggling and promotes animal protection and care. Following the incident, the cow protectors filed a report at the Kinjer police station. The station head, Simran Raj, stated that the cow protectors had arrived without informing the police in response to information about animal smuggling. The incident involved physical assault, and two individuals were critically injured. A first information report (FIR) has been filed, and the police are searching for the suspects. The cow protectors stated that they had received information about illegal cow smuggling taking place in Mandra Hat, Arwal district. As they were on their way to check the situation in person, they saw a pickup truck carrying animals near Khaira village. Upon stopping the vehicle, the smugglers attacked them as soon as they got out. The victims said that they were tied to a tree and beaten. During the incident, they managed to call the police using the emergency number 112, and the police arrived in time to rescue them. Hearing that the police had been notified, the smugglers fled the scene in their vehicle. The cow protectors further added that Mandra Hat was operating without any legal permits or licenses, and that illegal animal smuggling was being carried out openly there.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, three Hindu activists were brutally attacked by cow smugglers. They had only tried to resist the illegal transport of cows, sacred to Hindus as symbols of motherhood and protection. For this act of activism, they were mercilessly beaten. This case has the potential to be categorised under the hate crime database, particularly as cows are revered in the Hindu faith, and it is possible that the victims were attacked for trying to protect the holy cows. At the same time, there remains uncertainty. It is equally possible that the smugglers carried out this violence not out of religious animosity but as retaliation for the disruption to their criminal activities. Another reason this case has not been classified in the hate crime database is the absence of clear information about the identity of the smugglers. Because the perpetrators remain unidentified, it becomes very difficult to establish that the attack had a religious undertone. Since the religious motivation in this case remains unclear, this incident is currently being added to the “Undecided” database. However, if further evidence emerges that shows the smugglers acted out of religious animosity towards the victims, the case will be reclassified and added to the Hate Crime database.
