Political function disrupted in Vellore; Muslim youths damage banners and threaten participants not to come to “their area”
Case Summary
A group of Muslim youths damaged the BJP party’s banner and flag displayed in Ajipura village on 19 October and later confronted the functionaries who were present for an event. The BJP members stated that the youths questioned the right to place the banner in “their” area and damaged it, which led to arguments. They also reported that vehicles belonging to party functionaries, including one that was preparing to leave after the event, had been blocked by the group. State President of the BJP SC Wing, Sampathraj, was the chief guest at the function, which was held at Saravanan’s residence, an area predominantly inhabited by the SC community. Members of the Muslim community reside behind the residence where the programme took place. The BJP SC Wing functionaries said that they had secured permission from the police for their programme, but found no police presence at the venue. They claimed that the local police did not act on their complaint and did not prevent the disruption caused by the Muslim mob. Members further reported that the Muslims warned them against entering that stretch in the future and continued to create disturbance for some time. They later approached senior police officials, and the Superintendent of Police assured them that action would be taken regarding the damage to the banners and flags. The BJP members stated that they were relying on this assurance, expressing hope that appropriate steps would follow.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker because a peaceful program organised by the BJP SC Wing was deliberately obstructed and attacked by Muslims in Ajipura village, Vellore. The organisers had taken prior administrative permission; hence, the objection was not a random incident but a targeted act of animosity, motivated by hostility toward a nationalist political party. This behaviour reflects a broader trend where such events are often opposed, blocked, or attacked when near Muslim-dominated areas. By resorting to aggression, the perpetrators turn a peaceful meeting into a flashpoint of communal tension. The specific threat that such events should not occur in "their area" exposes the malicious intent to exert religious dominance of fanatic Islam while suppressing the political expression of others. However, as of now, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that the perpetrators’ actions were explicitly motivated by religious hostility or by an intent to insult or provoke Hindus. The opposition and aggression could be purely political in nature. Accordingly, this case has been entered into the Undecided Database of the Hinduphobia Tracker pending further verification. Should subsequent investigation or official disclosure reveal religious animosity as the underlying motive, the case will be reclassified within the Hate Crime Database.
