Case Summary

A cow was sexually assaulted by a 50-year-old Muslim man named Mohammad Shahid near the Eidgah in Agar Malwa, Madhya Pradesh. Jugal Kishor and Govind observed the act as it happened. Both individuals initially withheld information from the police out of fear but subsequently shared details of the occurrence with Hindu organisations. The police registered a case against the accused on 20th September 2025 and proceeded to arrest him without delay. Following the arrest, local villagers continued to express outrage. They placed a garland of shoes around Shahid’s neck and led him in a procession through the village, with a substantial crowd gathering on the roads throughout the event.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The cow is considered sacred in Hinduism. It is not just an animal but a manifestation of sacredness that is worshipped and treated as a nurturing mother (gaumata) across various Hindu traditions. Protecting and serving cows (gauseva) is a deeply ingrained religious and cultural ideal. Any act of harm or desecration directed towards the cow is therefore experienced by Hindus not merely as animal cruelty, but as a direct assault upon religious identity and spiritual values. Historically, violence or desecration involving the cow by non-Hindu perpetrators has often been understood within Hindu consciousness as an expression of hostility or contempt toward the faith itself. Such incidents tend to evoke profound moral and emotional responses because they violate both ethical and sacred norms central to Hindu life. In this case, a Muslim man was seen sexually assaulting a cow, an act that has caused deep public outrage and protest from residents and Hindu organisations. The nature of the act is both criminal and sacrilegious, striking at a sacred symbol that represents motherhood and divinity in Hindu thought. However, at present, there is no direct evidence establishing that the assault was motivated by religious animosity or that the perpetrator intended to target Hindu sentiment or belief. The crime, while inherently depraved, cannot be conclusively classified as a religiously motivated hate act without further verification of motive.
