Case Summary

A cow was sexually assaulted by a Muslim man in the Mukhani police station area of Haldwani, Nainital district, Uttarakhand. The shocking incident, which took place late at night on 31 October 2025 near Mangla Vihar Gas Godown Road, was captured on a nearby CCTV camera. The footage revealed the accused committing the act outside a residential building where he lived as a tenant, sparking outrage across the locality once the video surfaced. According to reports, the crime came to light when the house owner noticed scratches on his car parked outside and decided to check the CCTV footage. To his shock, he discovered that the accused was seen smoking a cigarette before approaching and committing the heinous act with a cow sitting helplessly outside the house. The incident immediately led to public anger, with local residents and Hindu organisations gathering at the scene to protest and demand the accused’s arrest. However, by the time police reached the location, the perpetrator had fled and remained at large. The Mukhani police registered a formal FIR under relevant sections of the law and launched a search operation to trace and apprehend him.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The cow holds a position of deep sanctity and reverence within Hindu civilisation, symbolising compassion, purity, and non-violence. Any act of harm or desecration directed towards the cow is therefore experienced by Hindus not merely as animal cruelty, but as a direct assault upon religious identity and spiritual values. Historically, violence or desecration involving the cow by non-Hindu perpetrators has often been understood within Hindu consciousness as an expression of hostility or contempt toward the faith itself. Such incidents tend to evoke profound moral and emotional responses because they violate both ethical and sacred norms central to Hindu life. In this case, a Muslim man in Haldwani was captured on CCTV sexually assaulting a cow, an act that has caused deep public outrage and protest from local residents and Hindu organisations. The nature of the act is both criminal and sacrilegious, striking at a sacred symbol that represents motherhood and divinity in Hindu thought. However, at present, there is no direct evidence establishing that the assault was motivated by religious animosity or that the perpetrator’s intention was to target Hindu sentiment or belief. The crime, while inherently depraved, cannot be conclusively classified as a religiously motivated hate act without further verification of motive. Accordingly, the case has been placed in the Undecided Database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Should further investigation or additional disclosures confirm that the act was driven by religious hostility, malice, or deliberate intent to offend the Hindu faith, the case will be reclassified and documented within the Hate Crime Database to reflect its religious motivation.
