Hindu woman drugged and blackmailed for forced religious conversion by Muslim man pretending to be Hindu
Case Summary
In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was targeted, drugged and blackmailed for religious conversion and marriage by a Muslim man named Aman Usmani. The accused deceived the victim by pretending to be a Hindu man. According to reports, the victim, who worked at a computer shop near Bhagwan Talkies, came into contact with the accused, Aman Usmani, a resident of Loha Mandi. The accused concealed his Muslim identity and introduced himself as a Hindu man named Aman. Gradually, he gained her trust, befriended her and invited her to meet him. During this time, he offered her a cold drink laced with intoxicants, due to which she lost consciousness. Following this, the accused took objectionable and obscene photographs and videos of her. When she regained consciousness, she was unaware of what had occurred. Subsequently, the accused professed his love for her and expressed his intention to marry. When she informed him that her marriage was already fixed and she wished to marry according to her family’s wishes, he began threatening her by showing the obscene photographs and videos he had taken earlier. He warned her that he would make these pictures public if she refused to convert to Islam and marry him. As a result of this, the victim became distressed and fearful. Subsequently, she quit her job, but the accused continued to harass and pressure her for conversion and marriage. Fed up with the ordeal, the victim filed a complaint at the Lohamandi police station. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Gaurav Singh confirmed that a team had been formed to apprehend the accused.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships or other sexual crimes. Within this, the first subcategory selected is- Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category selected is- Name Changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected in this case is- Brainwashed and/or Groomed. Within this, the tertiary category selected is- Rape and sexual assault/harassment. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. The other sub-category selected here is - Forced conversion before marriage, with the tertiary category being - Forced to do Nikah. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The other sub-category selected here is - Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Another primary category selected in this case is- Predatory Proselytisation. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu woman was targeted, drugged, and harassed by the Muslim accused, who pretended to be Hindu. The perpetrator deliberately concealed his religious identity to initiate and sustain a relationship with the Hindu woman. This concealment is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By hiding his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases of this nature, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and 'ensnare' a Hindu individual is not merely an act of personal betrayal but is also an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs. This reflects a deeper religious animosity towards the Hindu community due to their religious identity. The accused also tricked the victim into visiting him and drugged her; when she fell unconscious, he sexually harassed her by placing her in compromising, obscene situations and photographing her. Such acts amount to a clear case of sexual harassment targeted at a Hindu woman due to her Hindu identity. Such acts are done to humiliate not only the victim involved but also the entire Hindu community due to their faith identity, making it a religiously motivated crime. Furthermore, the accused took objectionable photographs and videos of her, through which he blackmailed and threatened her to convert to Islam and marry him. Attempting to force the Hindu victim to renounce her religion and convert to Islam is a direct attack on her religious identity and dignity. This is not a matter of personal choice; it is coercion rooted in hostility towards the victim's Hindu identity. Such an attempt reflects religious animosity because the act is not simply about personal differences but about erasing the victim’s Hindu faith, establishing it as a religiously motivated crime. The accused took her objectionable photographs precisely to blackmail her for conversion. In this case, blackmail was used as a manipulative tactic to convert her and subjugate her. The clear intention is to break the victim down, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, so that she can be converted. This was not random; it is systematic, targeted, and rooted in religious animosity. The accused attempted to convert the victim with the intention of marrying her. This conversion was not incidental but a prerequisite for the Islamic marital procedure, the Nikah. In Islam, marriage to a non-Muslim partner is prohibited, which is why she was pressured for religious conversion. The victim was blackmailed and threatened to abandon her inherited religion so that she would become eligible for Nikah. This demonstrates that the Muslim perpetrator specifically targeted the Hindu victim for religious conversion. The Nikah served as another tool to forcibly discard her Hindu identity, demonstrating that religious animosity was a motivating factor behind the crime. In addition to all the preceding acts, the victim was also subjected to constant harassment by the Muslim accused to convert to Islam and marry him. This systematic use of harassment as a persistent tool to coerce the victim into conversion and marriage to the accused showcases a deep-seated religious animosity and demonstrates how harassment is weaponised to victimise innocent Hindu women, compelling them to abandon their Hindu faith and establishing this as a religiously motivated crime. Such actions stem from an inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith, as Abrahamic faiths hold that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised until they convert. Such acts were not merely personal crimes; they were rooted in a desire to dominate and erase the religious identity of the victim. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
