Tribal Hindu girl gang-raped by five Muslim men associated with Trinamool Congress; Muslim boyfriend fled the scene
Case Summary
A tribal Hindu girl was gang-raped in a jungle area near Paranganj, by five Muslim men—identified as Apu Bauri, Sheikh Firdous, Sheikh Riazuddin alias Montu, Sheikh Nasiruddin alias Samrat, and Sheikh Shafiqul, all from Bijira village. They dragged her from the road into the jungle and sexually assaulted her on the night of 10th October 2025. The second-year MBBS student from Jaleswar, Odisha, attending IQ City Medical College Hospital near Shobhapur in Durgapur, West Bengal, left the college campus around 8:30 PM on October 10 with her boyfriend, Wasif Ali. Wasif fled the scene after being threatened but returned later to take the victim to the hospital. Police arrested Wasif Ali for questioning, investigating his involvement, including his decision to take his Hindu girlfriend to the remote area late at night and his initial flight. The three initial accused, Apu Bauri, Sheikh Firdous, and Sheikh Riazuddin, were apprehended on 12th October 2025 and presented before the Durgapur Subdistrict Court, where the judge ordered 10 days of police custody. The remaining two—Sheikh Nasiruddin and Sheikh Shafiqul, both locals near the college, were arrested the next day. All five accused, associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress party, were taken to the crime scene on 14th October for recreation of the incident, and police visited their homes as part of the investigation. They confiscated the clothes worn by the accused on the day of the incident, which were sent for forensic examination. During interrogation, one of the accused confessed to the rape, though police awaited DNA test results for confirmation.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a Hindu woman was gang-raped by a group of five Muslim men. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu women due to inherent animosity towards Hindus and their faith. Hindu women and girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and sexual assault at the hands of Muslim men. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu woman was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrators. Meanwhile, it could also be argued that for Muslim perpetrators, a Muslim woman would likely be more accessible than a Hindu woman. The fact that the perpetrators specifically targeted a Hindu woman could suggest religious profiling of the victim. Nevertheless, this remains highly speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. Furthermore, the victim has not made any statements suggesting a religious motive behind the crime. For this reason, this case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If any further information emerges that hints towards a religious motivation behind the crime, then it would be reclassified and included under the hate crime database.
