Cow smuggling attempt foiled; three Muslim men arrested in Amravati
Case Summary
In Amravati district, Maharashtra, the Rural Local Crime Branch arrested three Muslim men for illegal cattle smuggling during patrolling in the Loni police station area. Acting on a specific tip-off, the police intercepted a container truck travelling along the Karanja Lad–Amravati carrying thirty-six cows in cramped and inhumane conditions. The police team, led by Police Sub-Inspector Vishal Rokde, intercepted the vehicle and rescued all the cattle safely and handed them over to a local cow protection organisation. The container driver, Mohammad Salim Mohammad Hanif (40), along with Shariq Khan Kudratullah Khan (34), and Sheikh Nasir Sheikh Yasin (39), all residents of Murtijapur in Akola district, were arrested at the scene. The police seized the container truck and other goods valued at ₹18.75 lakh. The arrested individuals and the seized vehicle were subsequently handed over to the Loni police station for further legal action. The operation was conducted under the guidance of Rural Superintendent of Police Vishal Anand and Additional Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumawat, with overall supervision by Police Inspector Kiran Wankhade of the Rural Local Crime Branch.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, three Muslim men were caught smuggling cows and were subsequently arrested by the police. The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are smuggled for slaughter by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef), and desecrate Hindu temples. In all cases of cow smuggling or slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor. However, in the absence of any concrete evidence that the crime was religiously motivated, this case is being categorised under the 'Undecided' database. If more details emerge that demonstrate religious animosity as a motivating factor behind the crime, then it will be added to the hate crime database.
