Case Summary

A Hindu woman named Jayashree, resident of Shirlalu village, faced a terrifying ordeal on 28th September 2025 when three Muslim men entered her cattle shed, threatened her with swords, and stole three of her cows valued at around Rs 35,000. Distraught by the incident, she filed a complaint at Ajekar police station, leading to the registration of a case under the Indian Arms Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Police arrested the three accused: Mohammad Younis alias Younis (31) from Borkatte, Mohammad Naseer alias Naseer (28) from Kallabettu, Moodbidri, and Mohammad Iqbal alias Ikku (29) from Handele, Moodbidri. During the investigation, authorities recovered property worth Rs 5.87 lakh from them, including the two swords used in the crime, a Swift car, a Mahindra Bolero vehicle, and five mobile phones involved in the theft. The police stated that the perpetrators are habitual offenders, where Nasir had faced accusations in three prior cattle theft cases within the jurisdictions of Bajpe and Karkala Rural police stations, Mohammed Iqbal had been accused in four cattle theft incidents across Karkala Town, Venur, and Belthangady police stations, and Yunus had been accused in 10 cases reported in Karkala Town, Banakal, Moodigere, Hebri, and Ajekaru police stations.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, a Hindu woman was threatened with swords for resisting Muslim men stealing her cows. The perpetrators were habitual offenders with several cases registered against them for similar offences. The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered and smuggled illegally by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter and smuggling are used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter or smuggling, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor; however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, then it would be reclassified under the Hate Crime database.
