Case Summary

A Hindu girl was raped by a Muslim man in Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh. The 18 year old Dalit Hindu victim said that a man named Shahnoor Alam from her village trapped her in fake love, followed her while she was going to school and made obscene comments. When the victim’s family fixed her marriage, the accused threatened her over the phone and forced the family to call off the engagement. On the night of 6 November 2025, when the victim’s parents were at a relative’s house, Shahnoor entered the victim’s home and raped her. The victim told her family what happened, after which they went to the police station and filed a complaint. The Superintendent of Police formed a special team to arrest the accused. Police received information that Shahnoor was on the Korro Shahzadpur road to escape. When the police surrounded him, the accused fired at them. A police officer narrowly escaped. Police returned fire and a bullet hit Shahnoor in the leg. He was taken to the district hospital for treatment. Police recovered a country made pistol and cartridges from him. Police registered a case against Shahnoor for rape, threats and house trespass, and also under the SC ST Act. The police said they were investigating the religious angle.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been registered in the tracker because a Muslim man, Shahnoor Alam, committed multiple criminal acts, including rape, threats, and illegal trespass, against an 18-year-old Dalit Hindu girl in Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh. The sequence of events, which involved predatory behavior such as stalking, obscene remarks, and interference in the victim’s marriage arrangements, reflects a pattern of targeted intimidation and violence. The deliberate timing of the assault, when the victim’s parents were absent, further indicates planning and malicious intent. While the victim’s identity as both a Hindu and a member of a Scheduled Caste raises the possibility of intersectional religious and caste-based animosity, the available evidence does not yet conclusively establish that the primary motivation was specifically religious hostility. Authorities have acknowledged the ongoing examination of a potential religious dimension, but no verified statements or evidence have emerged confirming that religious conversion or explicit faith-based hatred directly motivated the assault. As such, in accordance with the standard of requiring clear and specific evidence of religious motivation, this case has been provisionally classified in the 'Undecided' database. Should further investigative findings, court testimony, or official statements provide definitive evidence of a religious motive, such as forced conversion attempts or religion-based threats, the classification will be reassessed, and the case may be moved to the confirmed hate crime database.
