Case Summary

In Lohardaga, Jharkhand, cows were being smuggled illegally by unidentified individuals. This incident came to light when the police intervened to rescue and save the animals. According to media reports, under Operation Shankhnaad, the Jashpur police successfully intercepted the vehicle of the smugglers and rescued cows. Additionally, they apprehended an absconding accused from Lohardaga, who has since been sent to jail on judicial remand. This occurred on 5th November 2025. Acting upon a tip-off, the Sonkyari police outpost reached the forest area near Gullu village and encircled the region to catch the smugglers. The smugglers, however, exploited the dense forest cover to escape. Despite this, the police managed to safely recover ten cows, preventing them from falling into the hands of traffickers. In this matter, the police registered a case under Sections 4, 6, and 10 of the Chhattisgarh Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act, 2004, and further investigation was underway.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The cow holds a deeply sacred place in Hinduism, symbolising purity, non-violence, and life-giving sustenance. It is revered as a maternal figure and often associated with various deities; the cow embodies the principles of ahimsa (non-injury) and generosity fundamental to Hindu belief. Its protection is not only a religious duty but a profound cultural commitment that connects Hindus to their spiritual and ethical traditions. Across history, cow slaughter by non-Hindu perpetrators has been a direct insult to the Hindu faith, frequently sparking communal tensions and violence. Documented cases abound where cow slaughter has been exploited as a tool to humiliate Hindus, force dietary violations such as forced beef consumption, and desecrate Hindu temples, reflecting a pattern of religious antagonism. However, in this particular incident, there is no conclusive evidence of religious motivation behind the crime. Therefore, this case is being added to the Undecided Database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. If any further details emerge that establish religious animosity as a motivating factor, the case will be reassessed and promptly transferred to the Hate Crime Database.
