Case Summary

On the Jammu Tawi–Sabarmati Express, a 27-year-old Hindu man named Jigar Kumar Chaudhary was brutally stabbed to death by a Muslim train attendant named Zubair Memon over a minor argument. According to reports, the victim was an indian army soldier, who was posted in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, and was returning home on leave. He had boarded the train from Firozpur in Punjab and was travelling to Sabarmati, Gujarat. The incident occurred around midnight, while the train was passing through Rajasthan’s Bikaner district, when the passenger requested a blanket from the AC coach attendant, a Muslim man named Zubair Memon, due to the cold weather. Zubair refused, claiming that the blankets were only for passengers in AC coaches. This resulted in a heated altercation during which Zubair took out a knife and stabbed Jigar multiple times in the chest and abdomen, leaving him bleeding on the floor of the coach. The TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) on duty, Devkishan Saran, was informed by Pantry Car Manager Shivakumar about a violent scuffle between the victim and the accused in the S-2 coach. Upon reaching the spot, he found the victim lying unconscious and covered in blood. The TTE immediately alerted the Commercial Control Office in Bikaner and requested that the RPF (Railway Police Force) and medical teams be prepared at Bikaner Junction. When the train arrived at the Bikaner Junction, police officials and medical staff were already present. A doctor examined the victim and declared him dead at the scene. His body, bearing multiple stab wounds, was sent to Prince Vijay Singh Memorial (PBM) Hospital in Bikaner for post-mortem examination. The police sealed the S-2 coach for forensic examination, and the blood-stained knife was recovered from the train on the morning of 4 November. Based on witness statements and preliminary evidence, a case of murder was registered under Section 103(1) of the Indian Penal Code, 2023, against the accused, Zubair Memon, who was subsequently arrested. The police also recorded statements from the pantry manager, coach staff, and several passengers to reconstruct the sequence of events. The deceased soldier’s family in Gujarat and his unit in the Indian Army were informed of the incident. Family members described Jigar as a disciplined and responsible young officer who had been married only two years earlier. Senior Army officials assured full cooperation with the investigation and extended support to the bereaved family.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, the immediate cause of the crime appears to be non-religious, that is, a verbal altercation over the request for a blanket. However, the extreme and disproportionate violence inflicted by the Muslim train attendant on the Hindu victim raises serious concerns about deeper religious motives and possible religious animosity behind the attack. The brutality of the attack, stabbing the victim multiple times in the chest and abdomen over a minor disagreement, suggests that the Muslim perpetrator may have harboured deep-seated animosity towards the victim, potentially driven by religious bias or hatred. Such excessive violence in response to a minor altercation often reflects underlying communal tensions. There is a well-documented precedent where hostility towards the Hindu community has played a significant role in similar violent incidents. These acts are rarely isolated instances of violence but rather stem from entrenched religious intolerance and animosity, fitting into a broader pattern of anti-Hindu hatred. In this specific case, while the disproportionate violence resulting in one death raises serious suspicion of communal undertones, there is currently no direct evidence to indicate that the attack was premeditated or motivated by religious hatred. No religious slurs or statements were reported during the incident, and the investigation so far has not revealed any prior connection or animosity between the accused and the victim. The altercation appears circumstantial, arising from a momentary dispute rather than a pattern of religious hostility. Since there are currently no clear indicators of religious motivation in this case, and neither the deceased victim’s family nor the injured victims have suggested such a motive, therefore, the case has been added to the Undecided database. If any further evidence emerges confirming a religious motive, then the case would be reclassified accordingly within the hate crime database.
