Case Summary

In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, a Muslim woman and her family lured a Hindu man into a romantic relationship and pressured him to convert to Islam. The Hindu man said he had been forced to eat beef and perform Islamic prayers. The victim, Shubham Goswami, reported that the woman he loved manipulated him with false promises of marriage and later used threats of false criminal charges to force him to convert to Islam. He stated that his name was changed to Aman Khan, and he was compelled to eat beef and perform Islamic prayers against his will. Shubham further said that after his conversion, he was sent to Karnataka, where he stayed with a Jamaat for 180 days, engaging in Islamic activities. Despite converting, the woman did not marry him, and her family continued to threaten him whenever he attempted to return to his original faith. Shubham described the incident as harassment, coercion, and betrayal. When the matter surfaced, Bajrang Dal workers protested at the police station, and Hindu organisations demanded action against the accused woman, warning of large-scale demonstrations if no steps were taken. Police said that the matter is being investigated and relevant documents have been sought from both parties. Appropriate legal action will be taken following the investigation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the first primary category of: Men attacked for being associated with non-Hindu women. The first sub-category selected is: Forced to convert after marriage. The tertiary category selected is: Forced to follow non-Hindu practices. In such cases, a non-Hindu woman is in a relationship with a Hindu man when the force/pressure against the Hindu man to convert his religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu man in the relationship; however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu woman starts to force/pressure the victim to convert his religion and give up his Hindu identity. In such cases, the methods used to force/pressure the victim to convert his religion often revolve around forcing/pressurising the man to involuntarily consume beef, forced circumcision, forcing/pressurising to read the Kalma or even pressurising the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where the Hindu man consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The second sub-category selected is: Brainwashed and/or Groomed. The tertiary category selected is: Victim admits being brainwashed/groomed. In our database, we have not added incidents where men have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a man for his Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incident of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim himself says that he was brainwashed/groomed to convert his religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if his family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert his religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to his Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered hate crimes. The second primary category selected here is: - Predatory Proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected here is: Harassment, threat and coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. Attempting to convert/converting by denigrating Hinduism. In several cases, Hindus are converted or an attempt is made to convert Hindus by denigrating their faith, Hinduism. In such cases, the Hindus associate with the non-Hindu perpetrators often by choice and then, the attempt to convert them by insulting their faith, showing the faith down etc begins. An example of this would be a non-Hindu gathering where the Hindus are attending the gathering of their own free will. However, once they attend the gathering, there is an explicit attempt to convert them by abusing their faith and hailing the faith of the perpetrator. The denigration of the Hindu faith is often based on misrepresentation of the Hindu faith, its doctrine and scriptures and insult to espoused traditions if not blatant lies about Hindu beliefs and ways. Such conversions or attempts at conversions are driven by animosity towards the Hindu faith and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. In this case, a Hindu man was lured by a Muslim woman to convert to Islam with the pretext of marriage. The woman's family first objected to the interfaith relationship, then agreed on the condition that the Hindu man would accept Islam before the union. In Islam, Muslims are allowed only to form relationships with other Muslims and any relation with non-believers is considered Haram (prohibited), amounting to sin, deserving punishment in hell. The act of forcing the man to leave his ancestral faith alone points towards the animosity harboured by the Muslim family against the religious identity of the victim. Here, the refusal of the Hindu man to convert was seen not just as defiance but as an affront to their Islamic identity, prompting the family of the Muslim woman to escalate their tactics from overt brainwashing to outright threats of implication under fake cases, just to induce conversion. The Hindu man was subjected to intense psychological harassment. He was forced to eat beef and was sent to a Jamaat in Karnataka for 180 days to practise Islamic rituals. Forcing a Hindu to eat beef is a direct assault on Hindu faith and identity. The cow is regarded as sacred in Hindu dharma, and reverence for her is not merely cultural but rooted in centuries of religious tradition and scripture. Compelling a Hindu to consume beef is not a neutral act; it is a deliberate act of humiliation and spiritual violation. It is used as a tool of religious domination intended to break the victim’s connection to their faith. Even after forcing the Hindu man to denigrate and abandon his faith, the Muslim family denied marriage; moreover, the Mulsim woman kept threatening the Hindu victim if he tried to revert to Hinduism. The diabolical scheme was solely intended to convert the Hindu man through deception and intimidation. The Muslim family used their young girl as bait to lure the Hindu man and applied threats to keep him trapped. This scenario can only be described as a premeditated plan stemming from inherent hostility towards the victims' Hindu identity, since Muslims believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Since such predatory actions are the result of doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the victim's ordeal began.
