Hindu family brutally attacked on Diwali night after requesting biker to slow down near children bursting crackers
Case Summary
A Hindu family in Ravindra Enclave, Baltana, was brutally attacked inside their home on Diwali night (October 20, 2025, Monday) after requesting a man to slow down his motorcycle on a narrow lane where children were bursting firecrackers as part of the festive celebrations. CCTV footage of the incident shows a group of youths armed with sticks and sharp weapons storming into the house and assaulting the family, leaving multiple members injured. According to the complaint filed by Sarita Shukla, the attack occurred when her children and other neighbourhood kids were bursting crackers outside their home. A man repeatedly rode his motorcycle through the narrow lane despite the presence of children. Her husband, Ramesh Shukla, requested him to slow down and be cautious. The man reportedly replied, “I will tell you later,” and left. Within minutes, he returned with a group of men carrying sticks and weapons. The assailants forced their way through the open gate, assaulted the Shukla family, and snatched Sarita’s gold chain and mangalsutra. “They hit us with sharp weapons and sticks. My wife was attacked inside the house while I tried to protect her. Even our scooter parked outside was damaged,” said Ramesh Shukla, who sustained injuries along with his wife. Sarita, who is undergoing treatment at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, said, “I was inside when they barged in and started beating me. My husband came to help, but they attacked him too.” She expressed fear for her children’s safety, saying, “If such a small thing can trigger this kind of violence, how are my kids supposed to step outside without fear? Even inside our home, we are not safe.” The CCTV footage shows several attackers, reportedly in their early twenties, vandalising the family’s property and damaging their scooter before fleeing. Police have registered a case under Sections 333, 126(2), 115(2), 351(2), 324(4), 191(3), and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against 11 accused, including Rahul, Raju, Raj, and Gattu. ASI Gurpreet Singh from Zirakpur Police Station confirmed that investigations are ongoing. “We are tracing the accused, and no arrests have been made so far,” he said. Police added that more suspects may be identified after reviewing CCTV footage and witness statements. The assault — which occurred during Diwali celebrations — has caused deep fear and outrage in the locality. What began as a simple, reasonable request to protect Hindu children celebrating a sacred festival escalated into a violent, unprovoked attack, reflecting growing intolerance toward Hindu customs and community celebrations even in residential neighbourhoods.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Although the attack on the Hindu family in Ravindra Enclave, Baltana, occurred on Diwali night while they were engaged in a traditional Hindu celebration, and the violence was disproportionate and targeted, the motivation of the perpetrators was not confirmed in available reports. Given that the assault took place during a Hindu festival and involved the snatching of sacred symbols such as a mangalsutra, the incident bears contextual indicators of religious intolerance. However, in the absence of verified evidence explicitly linking the attack to religious animus, it has been classified under the Undecided database. The classification may be revised upon confirmation of the perpetrators’ identities or additional information indicating a religiously motivated hate crime.
