Case Summary

Gautam Pramanik, a 46-year-old Hindu man from Malda who had lived in Kolkata for three years, was brutally assaulted by Muslim men on the night of October 11, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Kolkata. Gautam, known for his compassionate work with an NGO and feeding stray dogs, was attacked by a group of Muslim men led by his employer’s driver, Shah Abdul Kabir, and another named Sikander, outside his employer’s residence, while he was there to pick up dog food. Krishna Pramanik, the brother of the deceased, stated that “as on previous occasions, he rented a vehicle to visit his employer and picked up the dog food. After exiting his employer’s residence, the employer’s personal driver, along with several others, assaulted my brother without any reason”. The assault left him severely injured with serious head trauma, and he was found unconscious in a pool of blood. Rushed to SSKM Hospital, Gautam remained in a coma and tragically passed away on October 18, 2025. His family, including his wife and son, who lived on VIP Road, mourned his loss, stating that the accused Shah Abdul Kabir used to pressurise the victim to buy alcohol, suspecting the attack stemmed from Gautam’s refusal to comply with the driver’s demands. Despite the arrest of two suspects, the motive remained unclear, and two others involved in the attack were still at large. Police said investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to trace the remaining accused.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

Here, a Hindu man was severely beaten up by a group of Muslim men. Though the religious motivation at this point is not clear, it is important to understand that this incident did not occur in isolation. There exists a troubling pattern of violence against Hindus in West Bengal, where the community is frequently subjected to mob aggression, intimidation, and, in some cases, deliberate attacks by Muslims. This recurring pattern raises legitimate concerns about the possible religious undertones of such acts. Also, the disproportionate and public nature of the violence strengthens the suspicion that this was not a random act of aggression, but potentially an expression of communal hostility. The fact that the attackers mercilessly beat up an alone man over something trivial points to a sense of impunity often seen in religiously motivated acts of mob violence. Nevertheless, in the absence of confirmed details regarding the motive behind the attack and without direct evidence establishing a communal motive, it would be premature to categorise this as a religious hate crime definitively. Hence, the case has been placed in the ‘Undecided’ category until any pertinent information is received that may affect the change.
