Muslim mob in Pakistan kills Hindu as he tries to resist sister's abduction. Police tries to sheild the accused
Case Summary
A Hindu man named Laloo Kachhi was brutally thrashed by a Muslim mob led by one Abdullah Khoso, while the former was trying to resist his sister’s abduction. The incident happened in Kunti, a small town in the district Umerkot of Sindh (Umerkot was formally Amarkot) in Pakistan. The Hindu youth succumbed to his injuries. The Pakistan police were accused of shielding the accused by lying about his arrest. Activists privy to the case had confirmed that the police had declined to file an FIR in the case.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In Pakistan, Hindu women are regularly abducted by Muslim men, often older. Thereafter, they are forced into marriage and conversion to Islam by the abductors. In this case, the religious identity of the mob attempting to abduct the Hindu woman was Islamic. The brother was killed while trying to resist the abduction by the Muslim crowd. The religious motivation of the crime is first and foremost established by the religious make-up of the victim and the mob of perpetrators. The religious nature of the crime is also established by the precedent of such crimes in Pakistan. In a 2022 report, the International Dalit Solidarity Network said it was deeply concerned at the repeated reports of abduction of Dalit women and girls for forced conversion to Islam and forced marriage. The Pakistan-based Aurat Foundation and the Movement for Solidarity and Peace estimate that “every year, 1,000 women and girls are abducted, forcibly converted and then married off to their abductors”. These women are from the minority Christian and Hindu communities. Umerkot itself, where this crime was committed, is a hotbed of religiously motivated crimes against Hindus, especially Hindu women. The National Commission of Justice and Peace and the Pakistan Hindu Council (PHC), also confirmed that every year, over 1,000 Hindu and Christian girls are abducted and then forcefully converted to Islam and married to their abductors. In their report, they specifically mentioned that this practice is being reported increasingly in the Districts of Tharparkar, Umerkot and Mirpur Khas in Sindh.
