Case Summary

In Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, Hindus were forcibly converted to Christianity by a Christian man named Pankaj Rajput and his six Christian accomplices. The accused offered the Hindu victims various incentives and converted them to the Christian faith. According to media reports, this incident occurred in Hulas Kheda village of Unnao. The accused, Pankaj Rajput, offered Hindus various kinds of financial and other incentives and forcibly converted almost 15 Hindus to Christianity. This incident came to light when Bajrang Dal workers, a Hindu organisation, raised this issue and said that the accused was forcibly converting Hindus in this village for a long time. Innocent Hindus were being lured with enticements and were forcibly converted. They also said that the accused was being assisted by six Christian women in his conversion activities. Upon receiving the information, a large number of Bajrang Dal workers gathered at the scene and began protesting and shouting slogans. A heated argument ensued between Bajrang Dal workers and Pankaj Rajput, leading to a tense situation. Police from the Achalganj police station immediately arrived at the scene and calmed the crowd, preventing any untoward incident. Bajrang Dal District Coordinator Nitin Shukla, District Coordinator Vaibhav Srivastava, District Security Chief Rajat Thakur, and other officials demanded an impartial investigation into the matter and strict action against the culprits. At the time of writing this report, the police are investigating the entire matter seriously. Based on the complaint, the accused are being questioned, and the facts are being verified. Police officials have clarified that further legal action will be taken only after the investigation is complete.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is- Predatory Proselytisation. The subcategory selected is- Conversion/attempts to convert by inducements. Predatory Proselytisation is not just limited to threat, harassment, force and violence, but it also has contours of stealth. In several cases, the Hindu victim is exploited to convert, with non-Hindus taking advantage of their poverty. In such cases, the Hindu victim who is suffering financially is offered monetary benefits, including lucrative offers for jobs, health treatment, education, etc, to induce the victim into changing his/her religion. In such cases, the religious identity of the victim and the aim to disenfranchise him from his faith form the heart of the crime. Also, taking advantage of and exploiting an individual’s economic vulnerabilities is widely acknowledged as exploitation, forms of which are often penalised by law. Such cases therefore are considered religiously motivated hate crimes since the victim’s religious identity forms the very heart of the crime itself. This case exemplifies a religiously motivated hate crime, as Pankaj Rajput, a Christian man, forcibly converted 15 Hindus to Christianity through targeted inducements. The deliberate nature of these conversion efforts and their profound impact on the Hindu community reveal a calculated assault on Hindus as a collective. When individuals or groups, in this instance, Pankaj Rajput and his Christian accomplices, focus their efforts on converting members of a specific faith, in this case, Hinduism, it exposes a profound contempt for Hindu beliefs and practices. Such conversions are driven not by genuine personal conviction but by external pressure and persuasion, and go far beyond sharing an alternative worldview. They represent a brazen attempt to erode the core values, ancient traditions, and cultural identity of the Hindu community. Here, a Christian perpetrator and his associates singled out Hindus with ruthless intent, showing utter disregard for Hinduism and its devotees. These actions sought to wrench the faith from innocent Hindu victims, rendering this a clear-cut, religiously motivated crime. The use of financial incentives to spur conversions to Christianity lays bare the malicious intent behind these deeds; they stemmed not from goodwill, but from cunning exploitation of vulnerable Hindus precisely because of their religious identity. By dangling inducements before desperate Hindus, Pankaj Rajput and his accomplices wielded a form of emotional blackmail, preying on those in dire need to shatter their religious and spiritual identity. This pattern echoes countless documented cases where Christian missionary networks particularly target socially and economically marginalised Hindus to advance their conversion agendas. Such coercion ruthlessly divests Hindus of their autonomy and self-respect, imposing forced changes of faith that leave a lasting impact and trauma. Far from spontaneous or isolated acts, these are premeditated campaigns to dismantle Hinduism from within, coercing Hindus to abandon their ancestral religion for Christianity. Rooted in overt religious hostility towards Hindu victims and their faith, this constitutes an undeniable religiously motivated crime. Such predatory proselytisation stems directly from religious animosity towards Hindu victims, as Abrahamic faiths harbour a doctrinal contempt and hatred for non-adherents until they submit to conversion. These cases are propelled by an ingrained doctrinal animosity towards Hindus and their faith, manifesting as systematic efforts to eradicate Hindu presence through deception and force. Therefore, this incident has been duly added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records the dates of incidents based on when the crime occurs, rather than when it is reported by the media.
