'Rationalist' KS Bhagwan claims Valmiki Ramayana mentions Lord Rama having wine with Sita every afternoon
Case Summary
Rationalist, and writer, KS Bhagwan made controversial comments about Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. KS Bhagwan claimed that the Valmiki Ramayana, in Uttar Kaand, states that Lord Rama used to drink wine with Sita every afternoon. Rama’s main activity in the afternoon was to sit with Sita and drink wine, the author was heard saying that this is what the documents state. KS Bhagwan made the comments while speaking at an event in Mandya, Karnataka on January 20. Earlier in 2018, he had also stirred up a controversy after claiming that according to Valmiki Ramayan, Lord Ram used to drink ‘intoxicants’ and made Sita consume them too.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
It is pertinent to note that Uttar Kaand is largely rejected by the Hindus because it is believed that Valmiki did not write the document. In the 24,000 shlokas of Ramayana, there is no mention of the Uttar Kaand. Scriptures being quoted out of context merely to denigrate Hindu beliefs and faith is religiously motivated hate speech because it is specially done to mock the faith of Hindus in their deities and dehumanise the community.
