Case Summary
A complaint was filed by Maharashtra Police against Sameer Saleem Patel, a Muslim, for sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl in the Satara district's Vai area. The victim claimed to have known Sameer as a worker on their farm and later, her brother's friend. The accused eventually called her to the "Dream Coffee Shop," declared his love for her, and asked for sexual favours. When she refused, he gave her false hopes of marriage and took her to the Hindu holy shrine of Mandhar Dev on his bike. He began sexually assaulting the victim by calling her to the cafe after her college hours. The rape went on until December 2022, when the victim discovered that Sameer was having many similar affairs.

Why there is suspicion of a hate crime: There have been several cases where Muslim men have lured Hindu minor girls into relationships, by inducement or threats, and later, once the victim is involved, tried to convert the girl to Islam. In this case, the Muslim man also drove the minor girl to a Temple, which raises suspicion of a religious angle to the crime.
