Muslim man converts married Hindu woman to Islam under pretext of getting her a job. Sends her minor children to Madrasa
Case Summary
In Uttarakhand's Dehradun, scrap dealer Hashim converted a married Hindu woman by luring her with a job offer. He also converted and sent her three children, ages eight, six and three at the time, to a Madrasa in Chandpur, Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. The victim's mother said that her daughter married the father of her children, Sonu Verma, nine years ago. Due to a turbulent relationship with her husband, the victim stayed at her mother's place in Nehru Colony, which Hashim would frequently visit. He would beat up the victim when her husband would come to visit his children. Eventually, under the guise of getting her a job, Hashim took the victim and her children, converted them to Islam, and enrolled the minors to a Madrasa. On the victim's mother's complaint, police opened an investigation under the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act 2018 and other provisions of the IPC. Hashim, the accused, has been missing since the complaint was filed.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Predatory Proselytisation is not just limited to threat, harassment, force and violence, but it also has contours of stealth. In several cases, the Hindu victim is exploited to convert, with non-Hindus taking advantage of their poverty. In such cases, the Hindu victim who is suffering financially is offered monetary benefits, including lucrative offers for jobs, health treatment, education, etc, to induce the victim into changing his/her religion. In such cases, the religious identity of the victim and the aim to disenfranchise him from his faith form the heart of the crime. Also, taking advantage of and exploiting an individual’s economic vulnerabilities is widely acknowledged as exploitation, forms of which are often penalised by law. Such cases therefore are considered religiously motivated hate crimes since the victim’s religious identity forms the very heart of the crime itself. In this case, the Muslim perpetrator offered the Hindu woman inducement in the form of a job to lure her. The victim might have required the income from the employment to support her and her kids. The offender recognized and took advantage of the victim's compulsion, forcing her and her kids to become Muslims. Since exploiting vulnerabilities for the explicit purpose of conversion is purely based on animosity towards the victim's faith, this case has been categorised as a religiously motivated hate crime.
