Case Summary
In Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, some Christian evangelists offered Rs 3 lakhs to members of a Hindu family to lure them to convert to Christianity. After conversion, the accused refused to pay the promised sum to the victims. The accused told the victims that if they kept demanding the money, they would enrage Jesus Christ. The accused frightened the victims by threatening them with illness or death if they did not stop demanding the money.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Religious conversion out of an individual's own free will is not a crime. However, religious conversion owing to inducement or coercion is a crime given that it infringes upon the right of an individual to practise his religion without exploitation and interference. In this case, money was offered as an inducement to convert a Hindu family to Christianity. The act of converting Hindus by offering money stems from inherent disdain for Hinduism as a religion, where it is believed that those who do not follow Christianity would burn in hell fire. Since the act itself stems from inherent towards Hinduism, it would be considered a religiously motivated crime.
