Hindu man commits suicide after Muslim wife forces him to convert to Islam
Case Summary
Dushyant Chaudhary, a Hindu, committed suicide when his Muslim wife Farah and in-laws pressured him to convert to Islam. The incident occurred at Meerut's Nauchandi neighbourhood's Chitrakoot colony. Johnny, the deceased's cousin, said that Farah had trapped Dushyant in an affair and married him three years ago. Given that the marriage was not approved by Dushyant's family, the two chose to live separately. Dushyant tried several times to persuade Farah to return home with him, but Farah and her family insisted on him first accepting Islam. Johnny said that Dushyant also visited Deoband with Farah's family members. One day, Dushyant encouraged Farah for forty minutes to come to him, but succumbed to the mental pressure of conversion. Shiksha Devi, his mother, found him hanging from the ceiling fan the next morning. His brother, Johnny, filed a complaint against Farah and three of her family members at the Nauchandi Police Station.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The Hindu man was primarily driven to suicide because of the pressure to convert to Islam by his Muslim wife and her family. The secondary trigger of the crime could be prolonged separation from his wife, however, that separation was also driven by the Muslim woman not going to her matrimonial house because she and her family wanted the Hindu man to convert to Islam first. It is evident from the case that the Hindu man was not willing to convert to Islam - had he been, they would have been living together as a Muslim couple. Any element of forced conversion is a religiously driven hate crime.
