Hindu woman brutally gang-raped, beheaded and body dumped in mustard fields in Pakistan over alleged involvement of 'sorcerers'
Case Summary
On December 26, 2022, a Hindu woman identified as Daya Bheel was brutally gang-raped and beheaded in the Sindh province of Pakistan. Before dumping her body in a wheat field, the perpetrators also chopped off her breasts and removed the skin from the victim’s head. The deceased victim belonged to the Hindu Bheel tribe. According to preliminary investigation, there might have been involvement of “sorcerers” in the heinous crime. Police had claimed that her brother, Dayara Bheel, was also part of the conspiracy to kill her. The murder case was lodged by her son, Soomar Bheel, under relevant sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). The prime suspect, Ropo Bheel, who had confessed to having committed the murder, had been arrested.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Reason for hate crime suspicion: In Pakistan, it is often seen that the police refuse to prosecute Muslim perpetrators when they commit religiously motivated crimes against Hindu and Christian minorities. In this case, there were suspicions that Daya Bheel was murdered in a religiously motivated hate crime, however, later, the police expressed suspicions against her brother. This case will be added to the hate crime database if evidence is found of it being a religiously motivated hate crime in the future.
