Married Muslim man with three children poses to be a Hindu to elope with Hindu girl, arrested after victim's family files a complaint

Case Summary
A man named Ramijul Islam, who is married and a father of three from Lailuri, Nagaon in Assam, pretended to be Hindu and eloped to Kerala with Pooja Bora, a Hindu girl from Nagaon. He had changed his social media username to Munna Gogoi to trap the Hindu girl. The Facebook friendship then developed into a romantic relationship. After a case was registered following the complaint of the girl’s family, police took action and travelled to Kerala to bring the couple back. When police took them to the Muvattupuzha court for transit remand, Ramijul Islam tried to escape from the court complex. However, the police were able to catch him.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, the perpetrator, a Muslim man, lured the victim by misleading the victim about his religious identity and the victim's family complained of the man’s religious deception, making it a case of religious motivated hate crime, which is why it has been documented here.
