Hindu shopkeepers assaulted in Pakistan for ‘violating Ramzan ordinance’
Case Summary

The police officer thrashed Hindu restaurant owners including Hindu men who were reportedly preparing biryani for delivery orders in the local market.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. In this specific case, in Muslim-majority Pakistan, a 'Ramzan ordinance' was in place owing to Muslims fasting for Ramzan. As a Hindu, the victim should have ideally had no obligation to follow the Ramzan order and not prepare food. However, he was attacked by the police authorities for exercising his basic rights being a non-Muslim. It is evident that the attack against the Hindu victim was purely driven by the victim's religious identity and the sense of religious supremacy that is harboured by the Muslim majority. Since the attack was, in fact, religiously motivated and driven by the religious identity of the victim, it is being categorised as a religiously motivated hate crime.
