Women students at Delhi University’s Rajiv Gandhi Hostel for Girls (RGHG) protest against restrictions during Holi
Case Summary
The women students at Delhi University’s Rajiv Gandhi Hostel for Girls (RGHG) said that the varsity authorities locked them inside the hostel premises, barring them from going out on the occasion of Holi which also coincided with International Women’s Day. The students reportedly raised slogans and protested against the curbs that barred them from going out until 6 pm on the festival of Holi. Reportedly, a notice in this regard was circulated informing that ‘no guest’, ‘no late night’ and ‘no leave’ would be allowed on March 7 and 8 on the occasion of the Holi festival. No restrictions had been imposed on the boys’ hostel and the hotel administration had warned students of disciplinary action if they did not sign the undertaking. The students said that they tried to submit a memorandum to the proctor of DU, but in vain. DU proctor Rajni Abbi said in response to the protest that the students could go out with their local guardians or give an undertaking that they were taking their own responsibility.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the hostel authorities locked up the girl residents and did not allow them to celebrate Diwali. On the face of it, this would be a case of restriction on the expression of Hindu identity. However, the case details reveal that no such restriction was placed on the male residents of the hostel. Because this restriction was placed selectively, it could point towards the lack of religious animosity and therefore, it is being categorised under the undecided database. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
