Case Summary

In Nashik, Maharashtra, a 17-year-old Hindu boy named Saurabh Maurya was the victim of an attempted murder by a Muslim man named Farid Mansoori and his two minor accomplices. Saurabh, a minor Hindu boy, has 8,00,000 followers on Instagram and is a social media influencer. The accused, Farid, along with his two accomplices, demanded access to Saurabh’s social media account. When Saurabh refused, they attempted to kill him. Police constables Santosh Avhad and Azaruddin Inamdar were conducting a routine patrol along the Godavari river, beneath the Kannamwar bridge, when they noticed five youths—Saurabh and his companion, as well as Farid and his two accomplices—in a heated altercation. The officers observed one of the accused threatening Saurabh with a chopper at his neck and attempting to kill him. The constables intervened, seized the weapons, arrested the three accused, and took all five individuals to the police station. Saurabh and his companion informed the police that Farid and his accomplices had been pressuring Saurabh to provide his Instagram login credentials. Upon his refusal, they physically assaulted him and attempted to murder him. The two minor accomplices of Farid were sent to juvenile custody, while Farid himself was arrested. A case was registered against the accused at Bhadrakali police station under sections 109, 118(1), 352, 351(2)(3), and 3(5) of the BNS, as well as section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, the immediate cause of the crime appears to be non-religious, that is, over social media login credentials. However, the extreme violence inflicted on the Hindu victim and the attempt to murder raise serious concerns about possible premeditation and deeper religious motives behind the attack. The disproportionate brutality suggests that the Muslim perpetrator may have harboured deep-seated animosity towards the victim, potentially driven by religious bias or hatred. Such excessive violence in response to a minor disagreement often reflects underlying religious tensions. There is a well-documented precedent where hostility towards Hindus has played a significant role in similar violent incidents. These acts are rarely isolated instances of violence but rather stem from entrenched religious intolerance and animosity, fitting into a broader pattern of anti-Hindu hatred. However, as there are currently no explicit indicators of religious motivation in this case, nor has the police or the victim suggested such a motive, therefore, the case remains classified as ‘Undecided’ in the database. If further evidence emerges confirming that the action was religiously motivated, then the case will be reclassified accordingly within the hate crime database.
