Case Summary

A Hindu woman and two minor Hindu girls were lured into a relationship, persuaded to leave their homes, and were being taken to Nepal by three Muslim men. According to reports, three Muslim youths, originally from Azamgarh, were apprehended while attempting to take the Hindu girls to Nepal at the India-Nepal border in Sonauli. The three accused were identified as Ayan Khan, Basit Khan, and Mohammad Arbaaz, who befriended the girls on social media, subsequently luring them and attempting to transport them to Nepal. One of the Hindu girls was from Jaunpur and worked in Mumbai. She was initially lured into a relationship by one of the Muslim accused. The perpetrators lured the other two minor Hindu girls from Gorakhpur. All three were being taken to Nepal. Local BJP members noticed the Muslim youths taking the girls to Nepal and found the situation suspicious. They informed the police, caught hold of the three accused and handed them over to the Sonauli police. The police reached the spot and discovered that the girls were persuaded by the three accused to leave their homes. The police then notified the parents of the minor girls. Kotwal Ajit Singh said that the Muslim perpetrators lured these girls on social media. Singh added that the motive for taking the girls to Nepal is currently under investigation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, two Hindu minor girls and one woman were lured by three Muslim men. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu women and minor girls due to inherent animosity towards Hindus. Hindu women and girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and sexual assault at the hands of Muslim men. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu girl was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Meanwhile, it could also be argued that for a Muslim perpetrator, a Muslim girl would likely be more accessible than a Hindu girl. The fact that the perpetrator specifically targeted the Hindu girls could suggest religious profiling of the victim. It is important to note that one of the victims is an adult and, therefore, is legally free to make her own choices regarding relationships and movement. However, the other two are minors, which raises significant concerns. Minors lack the maturity to make informed decisions about entering relationships with adults or travelling abroad after leaving home, making them particularly vulnerable to manipulation, coercion, and exploitation. Nevertheless, this remains speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. For this reason, this case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that hints towards a religious motivation behind this crime, then it would be reclassified and included under the Hate Crime database. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the victim's ordeal began. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when the incident was reported in the media.
